I think it's pretty obvious this song is a personal message from David to his family about how no matter how much he struggles with his inner battles with his faith and how lost and confused he may get, the one thing he will never question is his love for his family. Ultimately, that is the only thing that matters.
Agreed, no matter how much comes between them, the force and possible death (space and returning/leaving the atmosphere) he will always, and he shows great determination, never to let go. He doesn't know how it will happen, but it will.
