Sink Or Swim Lyrics
Time is all we pass through
All the years I spent lookin for you
But now I'm here, if your feelin' the fear
And I feel it too
All day long,
And if it feels so right,
How could we ever be wrong
Selfish, your gambling, your singing your songs
Oh life is so short but tradition so long
Now if every rich man gave a little back to his home
Maybe we'd see a change, maybe life would be long
But there's a lot to be proven wrong
Time is slipping away
Accept it and you'll get it some day
Everyone burns 'til they come of age
And everyone learns a bit day by day
Oh my love, Oh my home
Well it ain't worth shit 'til your over it
And it's running the gauntlet, it's sink or swim
Sink or swim
Time is slipping away
Accept it and you'll get it some day
Everyone burns 'til they come of age
And everyone learns a bit day by day
Oh my love, Oh my home
Well it ain't worth shit 'til your over it
And it's running the gauntlet, it's sink or swim
Sink or swim
All the years I spent lookin for you
But now I'm here, if your feelin' the fear
And I feel it too
And if it feels so right,
How could we ever be wrong
Oh life is so short but tradition so long
Now if every rich man gave a little back to his home

Accept it and you'll get it some day
Everyone burns 'til they come of age
And everyone learns a bit day by day
Well it ain't worth shit 'til your over it
And it's running the gauntlet, it's sink or swim
Sink or swim

McCauley's trying to say that all our lives we work so hard for things that we never fully appreciate until it's too late. And yet, we still have to keep on fighting to survive, just going with the flow so to speak. But, I think it's also a commentary that the reason why this outlook occurs is because so many people are afraid to accept the fact that they're going to die. He's saying, open your eyes, realize that as soon as you come of age you start to die and life loses a bit of it's lustre. You just have to figure out what's important and meaningful to you and cherish it before the clock runs out.
Oh, and I think he's also critiquing religion a bit as fostering that idea that there's an afterlife and we have all the time in the world. I think he's saying when we die, that could be all there is, so we have to shake the uber religious mindset, live right, and appreciate the ephemeral. Just my take. :)
