No Widows Lyrics
This song is about the narrator considering his own death, and how he has never really done anything in his life to create any consequences if he died.
He never married, thus "no widows", never had a child. He goes on to state that he has no belief in a heaven or a hell, so he will basically just vanish from the Earth without an impact.
Also, in the last part, (say the wings won't break) he is essentially saying that he does not want to die now because (after this reflection) he realizes he has contributed nothing to the world.

I think you are both exactly right.
I think you are both exactly right.
Wow, I just heard this song, and it is absolutely haunting and beautiful.
At its core, I think this song is about the serenity of being alone. As I heard the lyrics, I imagined a soldier somewhere in a foreign land. He has no one waiting for him back at home. If he dies in his vehicle (If the wheels jump off the road) or shot down in the sky (Say the wings won't break) there will be no one waiting for him to come back home. Although this sounds depressing, I think he finds some peace in this (No perfect love above, There's no punishment below).
Whatever the meaning behind this song, this has to be one of best songs I've heard this year.
this song is incredible
I think it's about staying alone to avoid the struggles and pain of a dying relationship. By not loving anyone, he is ensuring that no one will be hurt, or "widowed" by him, and likewise he can not be hurt by anyone.
I agree with you about the song being about loneliness and feeling like you're leaving nothing behind. I do however disagree with the idea that because there is no heaven or hell he has nothing left to live for. If the man is a soldier "stranded out alone all year" with no heaven or hell, the main word here is pointlessness. The pointlessness of war. But not of living. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan has in Europe been portraid not only as a pointless war, but also as a boring one, which I believe this song captures. Just my interpretation.
definitely about contemplating suicide due to the pointlessness and loneliness he feels that his life embodies.
are these songs all supposed to tell a story the way Hospice did? does anyone know?

"If the wheels jump off the road There's no widows left to know No perfect love above There's no punishment below"
agreed with this song being incredible! also official lyrics available on their site :)
I think, literally, it's about a soldier at war realizing there's nobody at home waiting for him, or who would be devastated if he never made it back.
Metaphorically it could be like ChristianBrother said, someone contemplating his own death. In my opinion though, he wants to die. He has nothing to lose and no one to leave hurting. So, if there's no heaven or hell, and no love or family to hold onto, why hold on any longer?
"When they shake, say the wings won't break."
I suppose this line could hold up the idea that he doesn't want to die. So I don't really know what his intentions are, I guess. It could also serve to be a prayer/mantra for him, to give him strength in carrying out his service (if you're into the soldier interpretation), or his life. Again, it could be a mantra in which to carry out suicide...like, to quell his fear of death, hoping to end up somewhere safe.
fav song of the album, it's just amazing!
