So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
This day doesn't die
Til this day doesn't die x7
Forgive, forget
That's a lesson that we haven't learned yet
We try, we cry,
But our day doesn't die til the sun is set
Night falls, days come and go
No retreat, stubborn play the role
Held a grudge, seen it take its toll
Guess it proves I still got a way to go
Gotta stop bein' so hot-headed and hard-nosed
And get rid of the excess cargo
You know, lighten up my car load
Cause I keep veering back off down a hard road
I've been lied to and cheated on
I've been shit talked and treated wrong
And I won't forgive or forget
But I don't want to live with regret
So I hope that I can let go, move on
Try to forgive anybody who did Luke wrong
Yeah, right, I can hope, hopefully it'll do
But I don't think I got the will to
Forgive, forget
That's a lesson that we haven't learned yet
We try, we cry,
But our day doesn't die til the sun is set
Go
Balls to the wall til I drop
Love what I am,
Hate what I'm not
I no longer talk or text message any ex-girlfriends
And these ex-best friends
Who left me with stress and this neck tension
Never paid any dues but expect pension
So that's why our friendship is suspended
You though I would forget, guess again
Cause I don't have it in me
Don't have the disciple
Eye for an eye
The adrenaline is kickin' in
Burn me once, then it's shame on you
If I let it happen twice, then shame on me
Okay, I get it
This is part of a vicious cycle we live in
So unforgiven, gettin' heated with anyone who burns us
Dwell on the grudge but I'm still tryin' to learn cause
Forgive, forget
That's a lesson that we haven't learned yet
We try, we cry,
But our day doesn't die til the sun is set
Sometimes I think I'm a rebel
But I'm tryin' to be the bigger man
And never sink to your level
I try to stay subtle
And all my neighbours drama,
They're tellin' the police that I'm growin' marijuana
Thanks, you lyin' punk bitch ass wipe
Pricks come and go everyday, that's life
And truth be told, many of the episodes occur
But you ain't worth my time or a full verse
Shit, I forgive but I never will (forget)
That's a lesson that we haven't learned yet
We try, we cry
But our day doesn't die til the sun is set
Til this day doesn't die x7

The lyric, 'The day doesn't die till the sun is set' can be seen as a metaphor for life. In that, nothing is over until we die so we can't live our lives full of hate, remorse, and fear.
We all have to learn to, as the song suggests, 'forgive and forget'; regardless of the who or why we've been wronged, we can't dwell on it.
A really great song. :)
