Home Is a Fire Lyrics
Sleep, sleep with the lights on
Shutter and shades drawn
There's too many windows
Noise, cars on the freeway
Tempting a clean break
There's nowhere left to go
Watching the room tweak
Through cracks in the concrete
Plates they will shift
Houses will shake
Fences will drift
We will awake
Only to find
Nothing's the same
Nothing's the same
Home, home is a fire
A burning reminder
Of where we belong, oh
With walls, built up around us
The bricks make me nervous
They're only so strong, though
They're only so strong, though
Plates they will shift
Houses will shake
Fences will drift
We will awake
Only to find
Nothing's the same
Nothing's the same
Nothing's the same
Nothing's the same
As yesterday
As yesterday
Shutter and shades drawn
There's too many windows
Noise, cars on the freeway
Tempting a clean break
There's nowhere left to go
Watching the room tweak
Through cracks in the concrete
Houses will shake
Fences will drift
We will awake
Only to find
Nothing's the same
Nothing's the same
A burning reminder
Of where we belong, oh
With walls, built up around us
The bricks make me nervous
They're only so strong, though
They're only so strong, though
Houses will shake
Fences will drift
We will awake
Only to find
Nothing's the same
Nothing's the same
Nothing's the same
Nothing's the same
As yesterday
As yesterday

I agree with anniesomething. I think this song is about the fear of letting your walls down and just the fear of falling in love, especially when you meet someone capable of breaking down your walls. I think this song focuses on the fear of meeting and having someone capable of breaking down your walls that have build up around yourself over the years to where you become so comfortable in those walls that it becomes "home"
"Sleep, sleep with the lights on"-shows the fear of letting walls down.
"Shutter and shades drawn, theres too many windows"-fear that there is too many openings for someone to sneak past the walls or just the feeling of being vulnerable and letting your walls come down.
"cars on the freeway, tempting a clean break, theres no where left to go"- its very easy to just get out of relationships for fear of heartbreak or get out of the relationship before you become too attached, it saves a lot of pain for when/if things end. its the 'clean break'
"With walls, built up around us, The bricks make me nervous, They're only so strong"-fear of your walls coming down and falling in love.
"plates they will shift"-that part, to me, is talking about the actual process of your walls coming down. Things, perspectives, feelings, etc. they will change and when those walls are down you wake up and nothings like it was before- "nothings the same as yesterday"
Is it just me, or is this song quite Postal-Service-esque? I love that!
Also, I think it's "fences will drift" instead of "fences will turn." That's what it sounds like, anyway...plus, it rhymes.
i think this song is about how we get so immersed in our own comfort zones "homes" and when we finally need to break them we realize how nothing is the same as we expected or imagined it to be.
Home, home is a fire A burning reminder Of where we belong, oh With walls, built up around us The bricks make me nervous They're only so strong, though They're only so strong, though
this shows the anxiety of stepping our of our comfort zone. even though we may be, for lack of a better word, scared of our home we still rely on it to be our constant. our strength. what we have grown comfortable with.
maybe thats what it could mean.
spot on. i love how death cab for cutie can take something from the surface and really mean something so much deeper

I think this song is about a relation ship or a family per say. "Sleep, sleep with the lights on. Shutter and shades drawn." This refers to fear or tension it can bring. "There are too many windows." This refers to that there are too many possible routes the relation ship can go (some bad/good). "Noise, cars on the freeway." Those are the people who don't want to be in a committed relation ship so they leave. Noise means that they are loud which means there are many of them (which is very true). "Home is a fire" I think this refers that home is a great place of light and warmth and it's a place of bad and/or destruction. "Walls built up around us. But the bricks make me nervous. They're only so strong" The walls are the foundation of the home or relationship. The foundation or the bricks are making him nervous because they are only so strong (how many fights or bad happening can this relationship take before it crumbles?) is what I think it means. Maybe this is about Ben's fear of a marriage or home ending with Zoey. I mean it makes sense because Ben has clearly stated that everything ends.
"Plates they will shift Houses will shake Fences will turn We will awake Only to find Nothing's the same Nothing's the same"
Wow. I live in Christchurch, New Zealand and I can't believe how much this song sound like it is about the recent earthquakes that have destroyed so much of our city. Completely unintentional of course but still. Phenomenal.
Also, I think this is just sort of... a metaphor for being scared to let your walls down, maybe when you meet someone new. You're always so used to one sort of living, but then something Earth-shattering happens, and everything changes. Once you've met that person (for the best or worst) your life won't remain the same.
this song is absolutly amazing.♥
Small correction, I believe it's "attempting a clean break" rather than "tempting". Seems pretty clear to me that it's about an earthquake and the people's severe sense of panic, loss, and devastation.
This is my favourite out of the 3 songs I've heard so far from the new album. It makes me feel so at peace. Despite the lyrics. I don't know. It's kind of perfect.
