You Wanted It Lyrics

Run you coward, you run
These words crippled my confidence
The hymn I can't escape from
This is over and done with
This race had made me more than weary, I am dead

I created everything here that I wanted to see
So what that your plan, to leave me out?
We were all reciting messages and pushing repeat
But this world you made does it let you breathe?
Does it let you feel anything but yourself?
When was the last time?

Does it let you breathe?
Does it let you feel anything but yourself?
When was the last time you saw anyone else?

Whispers and echoes of love fading

The plans you made, you wanted it
The bitter taste, you wanted it
What god became, you wanted it
But the one thing you need, you'll never get
There was more of you and less of me
You blamed it on the chemistry
Can you close your eyes and when you rest your head?
It didn't have to be this way, but you wanted it

They were just calendar days
I'm sure it's all written down
But if you'll let me just ask
Is this how you bring the crowd to their feet?
You hurt because it wasn't about you (About me?)
You're always scared the floor is gonna give way (I call the shots!)
We could end this, we could end this (Don't you ever tell me what I've got)

Whispers and echoes of love fading

The plans you made, you wanted it
The bitter taste, you wanted it
What god became, you wanted it
But the one thing you need, you'll never get
There was more of you and less of me
You blamed it on the chemistry
Can you close your eyes and when you rest your head?
It didn't have to be this way, but you wanted it

I wanted!
I wanted!
I wanted!
I wanted this!

You made it such a lonely world
Such a very lonely world
You bent the answers into questions
You let the voice go unheard
And you couldn't trust yourself
Cause what if everything you felt
Meant this was not yours alone
Every single word
Every single little word that was said
And all the simple fears
And all the nights that you cried in your bed
Hoping I was there but you told yourself
You're old and alone
But you were never the widow
You left on your own

I was washed in the blood
I was born of a spirit but I drowned
When you found me out there

Rejoice!
Rejoice the old King is dead!
Long live the new king!
I am the new King!

Whispers and echoes of love fading

The plans you made, you wanted it
The bitter taste, you wanted it
What god became, you wanted it
But the one thing you need, you'll never get
There was more of you and less of me
You blamed it on the chemistry
Can you close your eyes and when you rest your head?
It didn't have to be this way, but you wanted it

"The hymn I can't escape from"

Listen closely and you will hear background vocals sing the old hymn "Blessed assurance" as Toby sings the following verse:

"You made it such a lonely world Such a very lonely world You bent the answers into questions You let the voice go unheard And you couldn't trust yourself Cause what if everything you felt Meant this was not yours alone Every single word Every single little word that was said And all the simple fears And all the nights that you cried in your bed Hoping I was there but you told yourself You're old and alone But you were never the widow You left on your own"

The lyrics are:

"Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood."

Then the next verse takes up where the hymn left off "I was washed in the blood..."

Another parallel from the hymn you will find "whispers and echoes of love fading" is in the hymn as:

"Echoes of mercy, whispers of love."

"I was born of a spirit but I drowned"

"I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit" (John 3:5).

This song to me implicates either a relationship gone bad or a close friend who betrayed the narrator (Possibly Devin leaving the band? Just a thought) Either way, this song is my favorite Emery song ever!

My Interpretation

Hmmm. This song is kind of tough. As this album is supposed to be VERY spiritual based I'm going to take a long shot on this one.

This sounds like it's about people who think that forgiveness means they can sin (if God will forgive then why bother doing good). So as it lists things the devoted sinner "Wanted" ("What God became, you wanted it" referencing how God changed after Jesus came and was less wrathful because of forgiveness) but the "one thing [they'll] never get" is the word of God saying they CAN sin. This person defends themself by saying it's just their nature to sin ("You blamed it on your chemistry") but in the end sin is against God. Sin is coming to God and saying that you're in charge, not him ("Long live the new king! I am the new King!").

Some other stuff I picked up on was:

"Run you coward, you run These words crippled my confidence The hymn I can't escape from This is over and done with"

I'm sure this verse is describing running from God and the existence of sin. Trust me, I've got through this before. The feeling when you hear a hymm or a worship song really gets to you. Gives you a feeling of hate.

"I created everything here that I wanted to see"

Goes along with what I was saying. Making up your own rules rather than what the bible says.

So yeah, that's my opinion. What do you guys think?

Errr. I was off. Here's an interview with Toby Morrell about this song:

"This song is just tough all the way around. There are some really cool breakdowns, an awesome hook for the chorus and it even has horns in the bridge that help create a classic Mexican-music feel. This song is about my struggle with trying to be in control and to be the god of my own life. It is hard to trust anyone else when you fell like you've got it all under control."

Josa is wrong about the line "what god became, you wanted it."

The lyrics are: The plans you made, you wanted it The bitter taste, you wanted it What god became, you wanted it But the one thing you need, you'll never get

These lines are about control. The idea that God "changed" when Jesus came isn't biblical. What the lyrics are saying is that in an attempt to control his own world, which is what the song is about, he has constructed a new image of God (what god became) in which God requires this perfection of him. He craves control of his own world because he feels that he needs to earn God's love, so he reshaped his image of God to be one that is demanding and judgemental. We crave conditional grace instead of God's true unconditional grace and love because it makes more sense to us and we feel safe when we have control like that (what god became, you wanted it), but we can't deserve conditional grace, so it leaves unsatisfied (the one thing you need you'll never get).
