Most of the songs on this album are about making a big change your life. The singer has still not been able to accomplish this. He's now reached a critical point. He's afraid that if he is unable to find a way to change his life, he'll become embittered and not care anymore. The singer here could easily be the "prodigal son" in "The Plains / Bitter Dance", hoping to be admired by his father.
pecknold has said in interviews that he doesnt have any friends outside of the band due to intense social anxiety.... i think thats what this song is about...

Thank you for submitting this! When I first heard this song I probably spent a day just trying to figure out the first two lines. It totally makes sense now, haha. I'm not sure if my correction was right, but I guess we'll find out once we get a lyrics booklet.

It's clear that the singer understands there are different sides to his personality and these different roles are clashing against one another. I read somewhere that this album was recorded during the break-up of a five year relationship - a side of him wants to impress this other person, while the other side just wants to move on. It's a song most of us can relate to who have been in such a situation.
At this point our hero is curious if he will ever change his woe some ways. And, if he ever does change what new person will he become...he's discovered so many identities he'd like to become.
At this point, our hero is tired of wanting more than what he can become. Tired of exploring himself. Tired of the conflict.
This song is biblical. It is a struggle with (his) faith.
I was listening to this song when I received the call that a dear friend recently took his own life. He always was and forever will be someone I admire.
This song speaks to the same point as Montezuma and Helplessness Blues. Robin is going through the whole deal of being able to care about others as much or more than himself, probably specifically his partner/ex in this case. He figured as he got older he would change, but has found that that isn't so much the case. He's also contemplating his own lack of significance in the universe - he's just like some random vagabond on some random shore, lost in time.
He is so torn from the voices within him expressing themselves loudly yet simultaneously. Part of him is desperate for acceptance and admiration but the other part couldn't care less. Maybe this is a commentary on his relationship to fame? In the end, even he doesn't have a clue what comes next, just like everyone else.
