Up on the Catwalk Lyrics

... One Two, One Two Three Four ...
Up on the catwalk
Big wheel is spinning and
Doll is to Deutschmarks and
Pennies from heaven and
Up on the catwalk there's
One hundred million with
Letters from thousands that
say just who are you, there's
one thousand names that can
spring up from my mind but
you'd call it blackmail and
that's just not my kind and
Up on the catwalk and
Up on the catwalk and
I don't know why

I will be there
I will be there
I will be there

I will be there
I will be there

Up on the catwalk there's
street politicians that
crawl in from Broadway and say
"Then, who are you?" and
Up on the catwalk there's
One thousand postcards from
Montevideo say
that I'll be home tonight
Get out of Bombay and
Go up to Bridgestone and
And look around to say
just what is missing and
Up on the catwalk and
Girls call for mother and
Dream of their boyfriends and
I don't know why

I will be there
I will be there
I will be there

I will be there
I will be there

Tonight, under the crystal light,
I'll tell you everything I need
Tonight, under the crystal light,
Surrender everything to me.

Up on the catwalk and
You dress in waistcoats and
Got brilliant Dino and
Friends of confuse me and
Flip through the nighttime like
Mine up from heaven but
But what do I know and
Just what do I know and
Up on the catwalk and
They sweat that glistens and
I don't know why and
I don't know why
I don't know why

I will be there
I will be there
I will be there

I will be there
I will be there

Tonight, under the crystal light,
I'll tell you everything I need
Tonight, under the crystal light,
Surrender everything to me.

Angel, angel, angel, angel
Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh

One thousand names that spring up in my mind
One thousand names that spring up in my mind
Like Dio Donna, Mike Collins you know, Robert DeNiro, so many others
Natassia Kinski and Martin Luther
There's room for others away from me, ohh
Up on the catwalk
Up on the catwalk
Up on the catwalk
I don't know why
Up on the catwalk [walk]
Up on the catwalk
Up on the catwalk
I don't know why
Up on the catwalk [walk]
Up on the catwalk
Up on the catwalk
I don't know why

How has no one commented on this song yet? Does no one like Simple Minds around here? This is probably my favorite of their songs (admittedly, I have only heard two albums, though). My favorite lines are "One thousand names that spring up in my mind" and "Under the crystal light, surrender everything to me." The vocal phrasing is beautiful and reminds me a lot of Bono from U2, at least his singing style from around the same time.

I think this song is about getting/being famous. Anyone care to expand?

"Up on the catwalk" is a another way of saying "being famous" or "In the public eye". This song thrives on celebrity and the falling grace that coincides that.

One of my favorite SM songs ♥

I’m going to be cruel here. While the music is large, bordering on the spiralling mystical, the wave which is often ridden by Simple Minds, the lyrics are pure rubbish. I’d say they were written directly inspired by the feel of the music as good lyrics should but the translation is terrible. You can kind of get a glimpse of what the music is saying through the words but they are so badly concatenated & phrased that it just sounds immature & unprofessional. I’d say more time should have been taken to craft them into something which may not make direct sense to logic, but at least corresponds entirely with the music’s abstractions. These words fall short of those ends. It seems Kerr is pulling from the music the concept of the millions of conscious souls existing and passed (a big idea), and the infinite movement of this mortal march, but tries to frame it within the concept of fame & glamour, or at least narrowing the idea down to the thousands of famous people who exist or have, however the music is larger than this, in my mind at least. I’d say Kerr’s own growing fame was getting in the way of his writing some damned fine lyrics to this amazing piece of music. ‘nuff said.
