Sinead

Apparently, Sinead is an Irish name that means "God is Gracious." So from what I can gather, the song might be about a person (maybe a girl, since it is a name of female persuasion, although I think that depends on what language it's in, as I have found it is also the equivalent of the name "John," therefore it also could be male). The beginning seems to imply that the person singing the song feels a certain sense of loneliness or purposelessness ("looking for a savior, chasing a dream"), which can imply that it is a song about finding someone (or for my fellow religious folks, perhaps finding faith?) or something that can fill that emptiness (or uselessness).

The problem I'm running into is that the song alludes to taking something of a leap of faith. I wonder if this supports my theory, but I'm going to relate the text as I have seen it. When the singer is talking about feeling no fear at moving past the mundanity of life at the risk of danger (or possibly death), this could be seen as a challenge on the life the person is living, and how they want to take that leap of faith (again, perhaps to glorify God in this world, or perhaps just to find some meaning in life). Leastways that's the interpretation I developed from the text. If anyone has anything to comment on or add go ahead.

Hmm, I could be wrong here but..

I think the line "Only you can set [it] free." should be "Only you can set [me] free."

Maybe it's just me, but it sounds more like "me" than "it". Feel free to let me know if you guys agree or disagree.

From the way that she has sang the song, first with her crossing the border and then the person she's singing to crosses then latter on in the song. I think that it a be a temptation song. That shes telling them that they'll like it and there is no fear when they cross the border to whatever that border could be.

The song was written based on a comic series called "The Unforgiving"

Sinead is a vampire - the rest should become clear.

I really did intend to respond many, many years ago but never got around to it and then there was the point that the last response was so old then I thought “what is the point??”. Phileaux is correct to point out it is based upon the comic “The Unfogiving” but then displays they have never read the comics by thinking Sinead is a vampire. Wasn’t 2012 when Twilight was all the rage?

The song itself is actually split into two parts as to who is “singing”. At the beginning of the song, Sinead is dead and is currently in the morgue. She is visited by a medium known as the Mother Maiden who temporarily stops Sinead’s soul passing over to the other side in order to make her an offer. Sinead has had a bad life – she killed her father in front of her child while robbing his house for drug money (she didn’t mean to kill him and pulled the trigger panicking while her father tried to grab her), she died murdering the violent boyfriend of her friend and it is implied that she has done a lot of other bad stuff. Her bad rap sheet is such that she is going straight to Hell.

The deal is that Mother Maid will stop her soul going to Hell and if Sinead fights for her team fighting demons and taking down bad people who are able to operate outside the law then by the time Sinead dies again then hopefully the good will cancel out the bad and she will pass over into Heaven. The reason why Sinead is offered the deal is despite all the bad things she has done, she has always been remorseful about every bad thing, especially the horror of killing her own father etc. It should be recognized that Sinead has wanted redemption, but has got into a vicious circle of always making it worse.

The first verse is that although Sinead is dead, her life isn’t over (just) yet and she (MM) has sympathy for the horrific life Sinead has been forced to live through. Second verse is asking Sinead what she really wants and if she really wanted redemption and how she (MM) is not afraid about crossing the border between life and death to bring Sinead back – not afraid being more about the consequences of bringing her back and not the act of passing over the border itself. MM is an experienced medium who has done it before. The third verse is the offer that only Sinead can set the past free and she will like the future better if she accepts the deal.

Sinead herself is answering from the “The second chance I know won’t last” line and acknowledges that although she is currently is in a flux of not being able to die (from aging at least), she knows she will die eventually and at best the deal will be a temporary reprieve. In Sinead’s second verse, the “but I’m doing what I should” is more of a nod that accepting the deal is what she needs to do and laments that her life has been a chase of running away from the sadness of her past that are too painful to face and she living to survive on a day to day basis. It could be argued that it is this “life for today, chasing tomorrow” approach has lead to her to making repeatedly bad decisions.

The last bit of the song is just the repeating of Mother Maiden encouraging Sinead to accept the deal and Sinead responding her past life was tragic and she will do what she should be doing until the song fades out…

I think they’re making a tribute to Sinéad O’Connor.
