Who would've known that I could conquer your heart
by reflecting in someone else.
And who would've thought that I could
comfort your heart, when I can't recognize myself.
I know how she speaks and how she moves
when she doesn't know what to say
Cause her emotions carry her away.
I watch it from my rooftop, every night.
And when I go to sleep she holds my head in her arms
And she makes sure that nothing will tear us apart
And then I steal a lock of her hair, and open up my eyes

I will follow you, you will be my main direction
I study you until I get your
Everything you do is a gem in my collection
I follow you until I get your perfection

Who would've known that after hunting you down
She would leave all the bones for me.
And who would've thought that she could leave someone like you
She left a part of herself.
You know how I speak, how I try to imitate
the way she lays her head on your shoulder
And you got nothing more to say
down to every detail I won't miss a day
Cause I know all her lines, her favorite things
And how her restless mind keeps her up in the night until the light
Will come and stand here try to catch her eyes

I will follow you, you will be my main direction
I study you until I get your
Everything you do is a gem in my collection
I follow you until I get your perfection

Every step I follow you in the wrong direction
I study you until I will get your perfection
Everything you do is put into my collection
I follow you until I will get your perfection

Who would've known that I could conquer your heart
And who would've thought that I could comfort your heart

I will follow you, you will be my main direction
I study you until I get your
Everything you do is a gem in my collection
I follow you until I get your perfection

You are perfection
You are perfection

    My Interpretation

I have a much darker take on this song.

I completely see where jumpp12 is coming from in his/her interpretation. Especially when taking the first part of the song into account. However- what could simply be a girl singing about forcing herself to assume an entirely different identity to please her lover is taken in an entirely different light in concern with the following verse of the song:

"Who would've known that after hunting you down She would leave all the bones for me. And who would've thought that she could leave someone like you Left a part of herself. You know how I speak, how I try to imitate The way she lays her head on your shoulder And you got nothing more to say Down to every detail I won't miss a day Cause I know all her lines, her favorite things And how her restless mind keeps her up in the night until the light Will come and stand here try to catch her eyes"

To me this changes the entire story. Now instead of simply being a completely internal fabrication it comes off as something sinister. She's stalking someone. The girlfriend of the man she desires. She is studying every move, every mannerism, every detail of this girl. Perfecting what she assumes is the ideal personality in order to replace the girl.

"Who would've known that after hunting you down She would leave all the bones for me. And who would've thought that she could leave someone like you"

This sounds like she is consoling the man for the sudden "loss" of his girlfriend. The following lyrics describe how she is now imitating all the girlfriend's actions, showing him that, although the other girl may be missing, SHE is here and- look at that!- she is almost exactly the same. So no need to worry.

To me this isn't so much a song about a girl feeling the need to change herself to meet someone else's expectations then it is the eerie, sinister story of a girl who stalks a couple, memorizes everything about the girl, and then kills her only to replace the girl when the man feels like her sudden disappearance means she left him.

Either interpretation is fantastic really, but I feel my own view takes more of the actual song into account. It's harder to make sense of the words in the second verse if it were something solely in her head. I mean the case can be made- but I really enjoy the idea of such a gorgeous, sweet, orchestral song having such a dark and horrible meaning.

sounds to me like the song is about striving to be the exact type of person you think the person you love is looking for. the song sounds like she is referring to someone specific - maybe a past lover or someone she knows her lover to have eyes for. when she speaks of the person as holding her head in her arms etc I think she is referring to the duality in her character between her true self who she has no connection with and the idea of perfection that she is continually striving toward. i also think these references highlight the connection between obsession and perfection - making it sound like her idea of perfection is an entirely separate entity.

i can definitely relate to this but on a more general level - whenever my boyfriend makes any compliment or nice comment about any female (even fictional characters) you bet your ass I've put them all into my "collection"

i guess my interpretation could be quite superficial (a lot of Oh Land seems quite abstract) so does anyone else have opinions?

I basically agree with you jumpp12. My opinion: A girl who made a guy fall in love with her by being someone she's not. In short: it's about a girl faking an entire personality, based on a person (indeed maybe a former lover, but somehow I'm thinking his favorite movie-actress, someone ungraspable).

'I study you until I will get your perfection': at first I thought the perfection of the person she's in love with, but now I realize it's probably about the person she's imitating that she's singing.

'You know how I speak, how I try to imitate The way she lays her head on your shoulder' : He knows...

I love songs that sound so happy, but when you start reading the lyrics, you realize how sad it really is.

    My Opinion

This song reminds me a lot of the novel "Rebecca".

Generally speaking, it's about a girl with little sense of identity adopting the mannerisms of a girl who badly hurt a man she desires, and thereby manipulating him into ceding the remnants of his heart to her. Perversely, she finds value in being able to comfort him in this way, and as a result comes to idolize the original personality she has slipped into.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
