Glass In The Park Lyrics

There's glass in the park
Darling, I can't help but keep making appointments
To sweep beneath the climbing frame

If the sun's in your eyes,
I'll tighten your blindfold, baby
Don't worry your foot won't get cut
Strut carelessly

And when you say that you need me tonight
I can't keep my feelings in disguise
The white parts of my eyeballs illuminate

And I'll wait for you
As if I'm waiting for a storm to stop
I've heard them talking
About how I'm gonna put you off

There's glass in the park
And now that I'm up off my knees
I've picked up the speed
To jump your palisades

And I shoot through the night
And suddenly all those once lost concoctions froth
And chase the day away

When you say that you need me tonight
I can't keep my feelings in disguise
The white part of my eyeballs illuminate

And I'll wait for you
As if I'm waiting for the storm to stop
I've heard them talking
About how I'm gonna put you off

You tell me, "how can I put you off when you're a matter of urgency?"
I've got a million things that I need to do, but they're all secondary
Make sure you're not followed
Meet me by the Death Balloon

Paraselene woman, I'm your man on the moon
And like a grain of diamond dust, you float
And my devotion's outer crust' cracks

So two years after first listening to this song, I've had a COMPLETE 4am epiphany about it's meaning.

First off, i'm 100% in agreement with SkyBlu about the lyrics actually being "storm" and "palisades" (do those not make more sense?!) and while there's definitely a sexual power about this song, it comes down to the fact that it's much more than that.

This song is an ode to uncovering an unrequited love. It's a possessive love where the person will do anything in return for intimacy - AND affection.

In the case of Oliver & Jordana, Oliver truly believed that by Jordana taking his virginity she was proclaiming her true love to him. In this idealistic mindset, Oliver then becomes obsessive and possessive (sweeping beneath the climbing frame, tightening the blindford) - over-thinking his actions and causing destruction to the people around him (Jordana, his family, etc.) as well as, most notably, himself.

No matter the relation to Submarine, the "I'll wait for you..." and "I shoot through the night..." verses are definitely concerning the excitement of intimacy and the lengths you'd go to just to be with that one person - at least one more time.

It's a love which leaves you blind, while everyone else around you can see the truth ("I've heard them talking about how I'm gonna put you off") and Alex Turner removes that blindfold in the song's last verse where an almost unimaginable closure takes place.

Maybe it's just me making this too relevant to my life at the moment, but how wonderful is that feeling when a song finally makes perfect sense to you? I could honestly go into interpretations about every line of the entire soundtrack. Definitely Alex Turner AND Joe Dunthorne's best work so far.

Beautiful track! I think it's just a simple love song though. And I'm pretty sure, it's:

as if I'm waiting for a STORM to stop

Yeah, I think a bit of this is wrong: "a STORM to stop" "to jump your PALLISADES" (pallisades means walls) and I don't think you need the quotations. I think it should be: -you tell me, how can I put you off when you're a matter of urgency- as in, "tell me how I could just put you off"

Remember that the book and film are about a kid (Oliver) trying to lose his virginity while simultaneously avoid a divorce between his parents. I think that yes, it's a love song, but Oliver's also saying that he's got more than his fair share of broken pieces in his life. He's offering the girl, yes, go ahead, play around with my emotions and make me wait for you, I'll just keep covering up all these rough edges so I don't hurt you.

Waiting like he's waiting for a storm to stop - when it's storming, you can't go play outside. He's waiting for her to arrive, so that he can finally have fun (get laid). The whole story is about hearing from a girl that wants to have sex with him, but not just yet. He's got to wait.

you tell me, how can I put you off when you're such a matter of urgency? - easy, the kid's struggling like hell to get laid, so how is he supposed to wait for her when he wants to get laid so badly?

I like this song, I know where he's coming from - I'm going through a painful breakup right now, but she's offering me to wait a few months and see if we could try again.
