I'm Losing Myself Lyrics

I'm a fast breather
I'm a hairless dog
and alone at the end of the day I am just like the gahering fog

I'm a slow mover
I'm the best-laid plans
and alone at the end of the day I just sit with my head in my hands

but we speak easy
and we seldom fight
and I chew on the bones of the day while you sleep soft and warm in the night

and I can't see you
with anyone else
even if that means holding you down
even if that means losing myself

he's a smooth talker
and he shaves his face
and I wonder if you look at me and instead see him taking my place

but I do need you
and no one else
and I hope you're around and forgiving when you see me losing myself

What an amazingly beautiful and sad song.. it certainly sounds to me like he's in a relationship he feels like he shouldn't be.

They don't fight, and he pretends everything is okay but deep down knows its not, and he can't get it off his mind - "but we speak easy and we seldom fight and I chew on the bones of the day while you sleep soft and warm in the night".

Even though he feels like he's 'losing himself' and can't give the relationship 100%, he loves her enough that he can't stand to see her with another man - "and I can't see you with anyone else, even if that means holding you down, even if that means losing myself"

However, he can't help but think she feels the same, and he worries about her straying - "he's a smooth talker, and he shaves his face, and I wonder if you look at me and instead see him taking my place."

The only part I don't get is the last line: "and I hope you're around and forgiving when you see me losing myself".... I think he knows 'losing himself' is inevitable, and just hopes she'll take care of the person he is becoming when he stays with her.

Heavy stuff! Brilliant song though.

My Interpretation

This song seems to be about desperation and an inability to let go of a lover.

He is over-analyzing their relationship; finding it perfect in theory, but in reality it is fading and she loses interest.

Missing a "t" :) Other than that, great job!

I adore this song so much - Robin's such a talented songwriter, as well as a musician.

I really love this song. I love the line "I chew on the bones of the day while you sleep soft and warm in the night." Such a beautiful way to explain someone that can't let things go and stays up late analyzing their actions and the day's events. I guess this song is about someone that is standing in the way of their own relationship. That's how it comes across to me anyway.

i think the line is "heather stalk" instead of hairless dog. heather stalk as in the stalk of a heather plant.

i'm not taking anything away from what you're saying, but i'm just wondering: how would that fit in the song? not meant in any sort of hostile way.

Speaking from experience I think it's about him feeling that she deserves to be with someone else but not wanting to lose her.

He feels his anxiety ("I chew on the bones of the day while you sleep soft and warm in the night"), low self-esteem ("I wonder if you look at me and instead see him taking my place") and depression ("alone at the end of the day I just sit with my head in my hands") is "holding [her] down," when in reality she could be perfectly content with the relationship.
