This Is Where I Came In Lyrics
(This is where I came in)
No need to tell me (to tell me)
I can see it in your eyes
I've seen that look before
That's why it comes as no surprise
So this is where you're gonna leave me
So this is how our story ends
(I can tell) So this is where you're gonna leave me
Outside looking in (outside)
I'm all alone again (all alone)
Which way to the door (which way)
This is where I came in
All my life's been Technicolor feature
That I had to watch in tears from the 13th row
I've lost every guy that I've ever really loved
But they never change the story
And they never start the show
This is my exit
And I know without a doubt
I came in lonely
So that's how I'll go out
So this is where you're gonna leave me
(Don't leave me)
So this is how our story ends
(I can tell) So this is where you're gonna leave me
Outside looking in (outside)
I'm all alone again (all alone)
Which way to the door (which way)
This is where I came in
When I think I'm gonna cry
And I think I'm gonna die
(ad lib to fade...)
No need to tell me (to tell me)
I can see it in your eyes
I've seen that look before
That's why it comes as no surprise
So this is how our story ends
(I can tell) So this is where you're gonna leave me
Outside looking in (outside)
I'm all alone again (all alone)
Which way to the door (which way)
This is where I came in
That I had to watch in tears from the 13th row
I've lost every guy that I've ever really loved
But they never change the story
And they never start the show
And I know without a doubt
I came in lonely
So that's how I'll go out
(Don't leave me)
So this is how our story ends
(I can tell) So this is where you're gonna leave me
Outside looking in (outside)
I'm all alone again (all alone)
Which way to the door (which way)
This is where I came in
And I think I'm gonna die
(ad lib to fade...)

I absolutely love this song, and The Contessas original recording. This was one of Jimmy Webb's earliest compositions. Suzanne Weir was the lead singer (with her four-octave range), with Suzy Horton, Sharon Johnson and the late Alyce Wheaton providing the gorgeous backing vocals. The meaning of the song is pretty obvious, a love affair is ending, and the narrator sees this as a sad pattern in her life. She feels detached as if she's watching it as one watches a movie. Beautiful song and recording, definitely seek it out. The later version by Thelma Houston is amazing as well.
