This song is about a couple who likes to take care of each other; it's a pretty basic need. The woman is perfectly capable of protecting herself ("got a gun and an eagle's eye") but that doesn't necessarily mean she doesn't want to be taken care of and protected by someone else every once and a while ("but would like somewhere safe to hide"); however, she still has to prove that she is not weak in her own right. When the song begins, it's actually the aftermath of an event: the boy has physically rescued her from an attack ("my dress is torn, you have a black eye.") They go back to his place and she sees that his "sofa is old" and his "room is cold", thus symbolizing that he leads a sad and lonely life. He's has just rescued her, so she owes him one; she will help the boy emotionally by bringing "heat" to the cold (lonely) apartment and "new" (hope) to the old sofa. She will "rescue" the boy emotionally to repay him for his literal rescue; their relationship will be mutually beneficial ("you've a reason and so have I, it's true".)

I think this song is about two people who, individually, are just a big mess. But together they save each other, maybe fix each other a little.

I thought she was saying, I'm going to rescue you, you can rescue me too. We can rendezvous. And also later, I didn't know what the grey gravel line was, but the next one I thought she said, that scatters and clarifies, and the smile and Brews line, I thought she was saying you smile, and I'll bruise. Or, I'll bloom. I thought she said you're the reason and so am I, it's true. And the last line I thought she was saying you're going to rescue me and be new
