School Friends Lyrics

You have a girlfriend,
but she's not your girlfriend,
she's just your friend, for the night

you'll have a new one in the morning.
and she'll have really pretty eyes.
she'll be invisible like you want her,
she'll try to do everything just right,
for you.

you have a girlfriend,
but she's not your girlfriend,
you just like her where she's at.

and you'll thank her for the things she bought you,
and you'll go on your way,
she'll be invisible like you want her.

she won't go to class, but she'll sleep in your bed,
and the next day when you chase the other girl,
she'll remember all the things you said,
to her.

Brad wrote this about how his expectations of college weren't what he actually experienced, the most obvious interpretation, I guess, is about a roommate he had who had quite a lot of one night stands hah.

I like the first line "you have a girlfriend, but she's not your girlfriend," and I kinda feel it could also be a reference to Cacie and how some people at college were like- "you have a friend who's a girl, but she isn't your /girlfriend/?!"

but yeah, I'm so excited for Threads!

I agree, and I am SO thankful I am too old for the time when sex because nothing but sport. It once meant something special to most and there will NEVER be anything better than love (true love and friendship) combined with lust. NOTHING. Todays youth are missing out on SO much by treating sex no different than they do dancing.

I think the meaning is pretty clear.

This person doesn't want to be committed to this girl, but the girl has feelings for said person. Person strings her along by telling her what she wants to hear to get what they want from her, then acting like she doesn't mean anything anymore once they get what they're after.

I think the whole "You have a girlfriend, but she's not your girlfriend" line is sort of saying "Yeah, she's not your girlfriend, but you know she should be."

My read is that this song is about about secret crushes. The POV is a shy male who - as we often do - admires his crushes from afar, and doesn't initiate anything. He has daydreams and forms a close relationship to his crush without really interacting with her. Then he gets a new crush, but it's as though the old crush had these experiences with him.
