I think it makes more sense that it's about someone that was "part of the group" realizing that he's not like the others because he wants to have a voice and vocal opinion rather than just "follow the crowd."
I think this song is about someone who suddenly realizes his friends are abusing him and he tells them off.

the more i listen to this i think its about his dog. the line is "like a bone between friends" and that says something and the whole exploring the yard idea and making human friends surely seems like its not from a human perspective
