I think this song is about the "end of the world" or at least an apocalyptic event where people don't realize the Earth/universe is going to end except for two young people in love. They see the world ending: the corruption, lying, wars, hunger, etc (the fire burs on unacknowledged etc) and yet nobody does anything drastic to fix it. They kill themselves together and someone walks in to find them and see the evil side of youth that brought the two to kill themselves rather than live until the end.

Peoples' hearts all reach towards the end, something that's out of sight; existing but not tangible. The last verse is the end, one by one and side by side everyone escapes earth and time and life.
