Winter Song Lyrics

Tell me somethin', give me hope for the night
We don't know how we feel
We're just prayin' that we're doin' this right
Though that's not the way it seems

Summer gone, now winter's on its way
I will miss the days we had
The days we had
I will miss the days we had
The days we had
Oh, I'll miss the days we had

Loving, leaving, it's too late for this now
Such esteem for each has gone
Has time driven our season away?
Cause that's the way it seems
In the world of the speech that is new
I'll be back again to stay
Again to stay
I'll be back again to stay
Again to stay
I'll be back again to stay

A very ambiguous, yet powerful, song, which has made it so impactful for many.

I do not think the lyrics are trying to depict any specific situation, but rather describe an abstract concept. That concept I believe is that of transition. This could be played out in many situations: High School grads going their separate ways, lovers moving on because their life is headed in two different directions, or even a friend or family member who is moving.

The situation itself does not matter-- nor was it intended even. What matters is the powerful emotions involved with coping with the fact that nothing good lasts in life. All good things, friends, relationships, family, comes to an end. Everything in life is a a season, and we will all come to a point where our lives will transition from one to another. That is why it is called "Winter Song."

These situations are scary, because we don't truly know what comes next. It is also melancholic because of all the good times we remember, and the realization that we will never have those same exact ones again. It even involves second guessing, wondering whether this transition is wise, or even necessary.

However, it is also hopeful. It is hopeful because it looks ahead to a speech that is new. But it is also because it hopes beyond hope that maybe just maybe someday this season may be revisited, and that someday we might "be back again to stay."

This song could mean a few things... The first thing that I think about when listening to the lyrics is that a couple high school lovers that fall in love throughout the summer, but the girl is leaving to school when summer ends and they'll miss each other but will be together and stay together one day in the future. Just a beautiful song, but sad.
