The Stand Lyrics

Tell me your weakness
Oh, I keep it a secret
Oh come on, just one vice
All right, it’s vodka on ice
But then there’s women on bikes, or just the women who straddle
Oh now you are a handful
I forgot about handfuls

I can hardly stand the sight of it all
I can hardly stand the sound of it all
I can hardly stand the taste of it all
I can hardly stand the smell of it all

Tell me your fears
Okay, it’s everyone here
You mean just all of the people
Yeah, and all of their peers
And all of their pets, and their chandeliers
And their cigarettes, I haven’t smoked in years

I can hardly stand the sight of it all
I can hardly stand the sound of it all
I can hardly stand the taste of it all
I can hardly stand the smell of it all

Talk about space.
Well it’s a beautiful place
But it’s so damn cold
Just for the human race, but for the planets and the stars
And everything else and Mars
It’s like paradise, spread out with a butter knife

I can hardly stand the sight of it all
I can hardly stand the sound of it all
I can hardly stand the taste of it all
I can hardly stand the smell of it all

Everyone’s fucked and they don’t even know

Amazing single, not sure there's any real meaning to it, just a feel good song about how messed up the human race is.

Great Song . The Last Laugh is Epic.

This song kinda sounds like it's about society's addictions and maybe how they (Mother Mother) are trying to avoid the addictions? "Vodka on ice" - alcohol "Women who straddle" - porn "I forgot about handfuls" - drugs Just a thought!

My Interpretation

i kind of thought "handfuls" meant something sexual - handjobs?

This was the very first Mother Mother song I heard, and Now I'm completely addicted to all of their albums. "I forgot about handfuls" I equated to Masturba.... I can't wait to see them in a few weeks. In the words of Ryan... WOOOO!!!

I think he keeps himself distracted with:

Tell me your weakness Oh, I keep it a secret Oh come on, just one vice All right, it's vodka on ice But then there's women on bikes, or just the women who straddle Oh now you are a handful I forgot about handfuls

From his terrible fear of the shitty world we live in, where everyone's all the same and equally as useless and consumptive...:

Tell me your fears Okay, it's everyone here You mean just all of the people Yeah, and all of their peers And all of their pets, and their chandeliers And their cigarettes, I haven't smoked in years

And how he possibly believes that space would be a better place to live, because it's so big and comfy, but it's cold and lonely, and us humans can't just go out there (in our bodies anyways ;]):

Talk about space. Well it's a beautiful place But it's so damn cold Just for the human race, but for the planets and the stars And everything else and Mars It's like paradise, spread out with a butter knife

I mentioned the leaving of the body because he mentions not being able to:

I can hardly stand the sight of it all I can hardly stand the sound of it all I can hardly stand the taste of it all I can hardly stand the smell of it all

...Being almost all of our "bodily," PHYSICAL/NEUROLOGICAL senses... it's clear that he's tired of perceiving earth from his current bodily perception.

Personally, I agree... Everyone's fucked and they don't even know.

Well the meaning is pretty clear.

The speaker is trying to comprehend societies vices and addictions; alcohol, sex/porn, drugs, social status, wealth, cigarettes.

He's getting tired of it all.

He then makes a rather nice reference to space. I believe he's trying to imply that their is beauty in everything (including space, which we may see as simply cold and lonely), and we don't need all this shit around us to be happy.

I think the title then, 'The Stand' is referencing taking a stand against all this excess.
