Skip the Charades Lyrics
You wait on letters
Fishing for any sign of life
Drinks after dinner
Your friends will get you to unwind
Let's skip the charades
Can we just speak plain?
I'm two left feet when
I'm home we tapdanced on broken glass
Somehow you manage
To keep your sense of humor in tact
Let's skip the charades
You're seeing right through me anyway
Can we just speak plain?
We're playing for the same team
But I'm the one that's acting like
Acting like
Acting like
I'm so strong
You're the one that's acting like
Acting like
Acting like
Nothing's wrong
You dodged the bullet
You do your best when you're busiest
You're disconnected
You can't find your name in the script
It was you who were wildest
It was you who floated above us all
I held on with wires
Will you come back down if I let you go?
Let's skip the charades
You're seeing right through me anyway
Can we just speak plain?
We're playing for the same team
But I'm the one that's acting like I'm so strong
You're the one that's acting like nothing's wrong
I'm the one that's acting like I'm so strong

I think it could either be that the relationship is in a rut, or that they broke up and one person is suffering while the other acts like nothing is wrong.
Cold War Kids are my favourite band. This song is one of my favourites on the new album, the whole album blows me away, as always. This song gets me emotional every time and I have cried to it. I can relate to it. Two years ago I was the one in the song who is acting like nothing is wrong while keeping my humour in tact and lying, lost. He acted strong and tried so badly to communicate with me plainly, I was being wild and learning and disconnected. But we made it through it. :) The line, 'Will you come back down if I let you go?' is what gets me everytime and the chorus' 'We're playing for the same team'. AMAZING SONG.
I think this song's about a couple who's stuck in a rut and is avoiding the obvious fact that there relationship is done.
I like to think that this song is about either the very end of a relationship or right after it ended. He's trying to get her to listen to him, so that he can a) break up with her b) try to get it to work out or c) tend to the aftermath of a great thing. She must be ignoring him and pretending like nothing is wrong, while acting completely normal opposed to the fact that she isn't communicating with him. He just wants her to understand what's going on and is getting upset and angry over her reaction.
This song definitely brings tears to my eyes because I was in the same situation, I was the one who just wanted to talk but my now ex just wanted to play the silent card and when I saw him, just pretended like we were fine when we weren't. I know from experience how frustrating that is, and understand why the song picks up to be a louder, sort of angrier tone at the end, because his patience is running thin.
"I'm the one that's acting like I'm so strong; you're the one that's acting like nothing's wrong."
Those are the same thing. If I'm "acting like I'm so strong", she might think I'm "acting like nothing's wrong" and vice versa. Because of that line, I immediately connected with this song; after hearing it a few times, it occurred to me that both parties in this song are putting on a charade.
