Rubber Ball Lyrics
Rolling around like a big rubber ball
Writing this song about some things that I saw
Trying to stand like a big strong tough man
Finding out fast that I'm sinking in sand
All I got is nothing but
A little bit of love and gonna
Give it to the people then they'll
See, then they'll see
Spinning the tops as the tables they turn
Made some mistakes but I still couldn't learn
Covered my tracks, thought I was fine
Got no self control now I'm back here in line
All I got is nothing but
A little bit of love and gonna
Give it to the people then they'll
See, then they'll see
Writing this song about some things that I saw
Trying to stand like a big strong tough man
Finding out fast that I'm sinking in sand
A little bit of love and gonna
Give it to the people then they'll
See, then they'll see
Made some mistakes but I still couldn't learn
Covered my tracks, thought I was fine
Got no self control now I'm back here in line
A little bit of love and gonna
Give it to the people then they'll
See, then they'll see

Ever since people found out about his past addiction, everyone has been saying every song is about it... That doesn't obviously reference anything specific, just mistakes made in life in general.
Very Honest song about how life can be hard, but if you just live and love things will be ok. I can sense a tone of understanding in the singer's voice. Great song, fantastic CD.

obviouisly references to his experiences on drugs and getting over them. impressive controll for a dude in his twenties.
As with any songwriter, Matt's past experiences are going to greatly influence his work, so I feel that it would be unavoidable for him to not be thinking about his former heroin abuse when he developed this song. I completely agree that this song is about the mistakes Matt has made over his life and about how by accepting that he made mistakes to begin with (rather than covering them up) he is able to learn from them. The song is certainly not limited to Matt's mistakes in the drug world, but those mistakes and the lessons learned from them are certainly going to be present in Matt's songwriting.
I idolize Matt's grip on human nature and his raw ability to express his emotions and perspectives so powerfully through his voice and his words
