The Origin Of God Lyrics

A prime mover only shifts the problem;
If every complex structure needs an architect
Then this prime mover must be even more complex
Than anything he created

Who made your architect? Who made your architect?
Where does he come from? What is he made of?
Who made your architect? Who made your architect?
Where does he come from? What is he made of?

Who made your architect? Who made your architect?
Where does he come from? What is he made of?
Who made your architect? Who made your architect?
Where does he come from? What is he made of?

Who made your architect? Who made your architect?
Where does he come from? What is he made of?
Who made your architect? Who made your architect?
Where does he come from? What is he made of?

Who made your architect? Who made your architect?
Where does he come from? What is he made of?

Cover art for The Origin Of God lyrics by Ocean, The

'Every complex structure needs an architect'.

They are referring to the fact that everything we see around us, from the smallest particles to the most massive nebulae that swallow galaxies whole, all come from the same source. Imagine the universe as a giant cosmic watch - but this watch has an almost infinite number of cogs and gears. If one of these tiny parts were to break or slip then the whole would cease to work. Some believe that we are here among this matrix of storms and stars purely by coincidence, they argue that probability dictates intelligent life must eventually arise from the universe's infinite variety. But could a series of laws of structures as finely tuned as the ones that keep us alive (and evolving, some say) have really come about by chance? Was the watchmaker blind, so to speak? If on the other hand, we were created on purpose, then our architect must be 'even more complete than anything he created'. We are the universe made conscious of itself, one small facet of the whole - but the universe is but one small part of the architect. When i talk of the architect, or 'god', i am not referring to the god of christian or any other faith; only the force than enabled us and everything to be here. Each religion may have some small hint of the truth, but they are really just different interpretations of the same theme.

'Who made your architect? Where does he come from? What is he made of?' A profound question indeed, and one we will never answer.

Song Meaning

You completely missed the point here. They're not pondering what created the universe, they're disputing the claim that there is a God. It's a frequent argument for religion that the world must have been created by something more complex than itself - the "Architect". They apply the same question to the Architect... If everything has to be made by something more complex then where did the architect come from? What more complex being created him/her/it? Therefore the original point is self-defeating.

The song follows on from The Origin of Species which states that evolution really is...

Robin Staps, the dude who writes most of The Ocean's music, believes Christianity is "bullshit." Heliocentric and Anthropocentric are a "critique of Christianity." The quotes are his words.

You fucking idiot. That's not it at all. The band is clearly atheist. So what is being said is, "oh, you think the universe was created??? All this was too much to just randomly happen? Ok, who made your designer then? He must be more complex than anything we see here today, the same things that are too complex to exist without a creator. So that means something created the creator, who was that?"

Basically it is saying the idea of a creator (god) is ridiculous.
