Buried Beneath Lyrics

My eyes have adjusted to dark and so is my heart
The weight of the world has covered me
I'm in over my head
Am I living or dead
Can anyone hear me calling out
I'm calling out

Finally breaking so where are you now
It's been such a long time
But I've tried to live without
I'm suffocating I need you to breathe
So reach down and pull me up
Pull me up before I am buried beneath

I built this house on the shore
All I want was more
But I felt the sand start shifting
I saw the cracks in the walls
I painted over them all
I tried my best to just ignore
I can't ignore

Finally breaking so where are you now
It's been such a long time
But I've tried to live without
I'm suffocating I need you to breathe
So reach down and pull me up
Pull me up before I am buried beneath

I Thought I was climbing out
But it's dragging me down
What's hidden here with me
Thought I was alone
But it pulls me deeper now
I can't escape

Finally breaking so where are you now
It's been such a long time
But I've tried to live without
I'm suffocating I need you to breathe
So reach down and pull me up
Pull me up before I am buried beneath

I feel like the song speaks about a person who has lost their sight of God. Where it talks about building the house on the shore, I feel this is talking where in the Gospel God talks about the parable where the man builds his house on the sands, and it gets washed away. So the man here has built his life on the shores, living without God, and then when the sands shift and the tide begins to rise, the house begins to crumble, and he is praying for God to pull him out of the water cause he is drowing.

Finally breaking so where are you now It's been such a long time But I've tried to live without I'm suffocating I need you to breathe So reach down and pull me up Pull me up before I am buried beneath

The man realizes how much he really needs God in his life and is asking for his Savior to pull him out of the wreckage of his life.

This song is basically about trying to do things our way, failing, then needing Jesus to "pull us up." Pretty similar song to "Breathe into me."

The second chorus is referencing the parable of a man who builds his house on the sand in Matthew 7: 24-27.

Stop trying to find religion in every song. It has nothing to do with it.

I believe that cookiejmonster is 100% correct. Honestly not sure how you could try to take the religion out of the the song, by a Christian band. A song obviously referring to a bible verse. Though we are clearly entitled to our own opinion, we don't need to go about bashing other people. Maybe you should look a little more into the band, before you go about making assumptions, of what they wrote the song about. Rather then bashing someones comment, perhaps make your own, and tell everyone what this song means to you.

It would seem that the singer is grieving over a broken relationship that he incessantly tried to protect and preserve. This is evident when he mentions:

I built this house on the shore All I want was more But I felt the sand start shifting I saw the cracks in the walls I painted over them all I tried my best to just ignore I can't ignore

Unfortunately his significant other had other plans and left him to try to keep the love they built solely on his shoulders and now he's buried beneath the unrequited love and this is noticed by the lines:

Finally breaking so where are you now It's been such a long time But I've tried to live without I'm suffocating I need you to breathe So reach down and pull me up Pull me up before I am buried beneath

It's a painful song overall and something many of us live with.

I think this may be my favorite Red song. The intro is amazing. The second I heard the bells I was hooked.

I think this song kinda fits in the theme of the whole album, of having a "mass facelesness". This song is about being "buried beneath" the darkness of the world, and in that metaphorical suffocation, you ask for god to pull you out. and just saying, those first lines are amazing "My Eyes have adjusted to dark, and so has my heart" <3

I see this as someone who has been through a lot, possibly too much, that they have reached the point of either no return, rock bottom, or that they just give up on finding bliss. "The weight of the world" could be all the bad events in their past because as much as you try you cannot escape it. "am I living or dead" could refer to being dead on the inside but not physically, and you're maybe wondering if other people can see that. the chorus makes me think that they possibly had someone who had stuck by them in the past but as time progressed the two of them had just drifted apart, but that the one finally breaking realizes they need that one person more than ever; "I've tried to live without" could be them giving a reason why they had been a shut in [tried to live without needing the help of others]. "buried beneath" could just mean being lost within themselves. the part about the house makes me think that even if they try their hardest to succeed at something they wanted they could never be satisfied.

"I Thought I was climbing out/ But it's dragging me down/ What's hidden here with me/ Thought I was alone/ But it pulls me deeper now/ I can't escape" I think would be where he felt he was making progress with self-healing, but ended up realizing he was slipping further into the darkness; and sometimes you really can't save yourself, which is actually a bad thing because you technically are the only one who can be your savior.

Great song. It could have more than one meaning. I love how Red use orchestral elements in their songs- it's a great touch!

It's like saying you need help to be pulled from quicksand. You try your hardest yourself, only to sink deeper. Don't deny help when it's offered.
