Overall, this song is about the singer’s reluctance to end a relationship with someone that he loves, but which is ultimately not working out. There is a sunset theme throughout the song that paints the setting of the relationship beautifully.

I think this refers to them planning a future together, skipping over the intricate details of building a life, and just discussing the things that make her happiness grow.

The chorus has to do with his reluctance to part from her, although he feels differently about the relationship since it began.

The bells represents a call to action so to speak, much like how in Cinderella the clock chime meant it was time for her to go. I believe heights of diamond may refer to Diamond Heights in San Francisco since the band is from that area, but I’m not sure.

This girl will write down her secrets and leave them in public and obscure places, but she will never talk to anyone about them. She’s somewhat closed off to the world about her feelings.

The Western Sea reference is another reason why I think heights of diamond might relate to San Francisco. The sun has set for the last time on this relationship- he’s ending it. I love the last line- “ And I watch you watch me while I walk away”- he’s looking at her in a reflection of some sort as he leaves. It shows his reluctance and his bravery to leave this girl.

The girl is heartbroken- there is no more color or life in the relationship and she is stunned that it is over. She never expected that he would leave her.

It’s finally dark outside and the relationship he was in with her is over, and although he’s still lost, the darkness of his world is what enables the lodestar to appear- the navigational beacon that will guide him to where he needs to go even though he can’t believe it’s over.
