Heights Of Diamond Lyrics
Gravemaker, lay down your spade
And come again some other day
I'd rather watch the colors fade awhile
From pawnshop shades to balconies
We'll paraphrase eternities
And oh, the evolutions of your smile
'Cause I'll still be coming
As the daylight's drawn in
And the feeling fades away
But the bells are chiming
And the heights of diamond
As I'm trying to find my way
Silently, your secrets scrawled
On paper cranes and bathroom walls
But no-one's dared figure you out
So you held me like a sinking stone
The one you should have never thrown
But it's too late, too late to dry me out
'Cause your touch still lingers
On my shaky fingers
As the feeling fades away
And the bells are chiming
In the heights of diamond
As I'm trying to find my way
But it's sundown on the Western Sea
And each one sinks in infamy
And I watch you watch me while I walk away
And it's daylight on the patio
Did they forget to let you know
That everyone needs someone to betray?
Well my lode star is beaming
But I might be dreaming
As the feeling fades away
And the bells are chiming
In the heights of diamond
As I'm trying to find my way
And come again some other day
I'd rather watch the colors fade awhile
We'll paraphrase eternities
And oh, the evolutions of your smile
As the daylight's drawn in
And the feeling fades away
And the heights of diamond
As I'm trying to find my way
On paper cranes and bathroom walls
But no-one's dared figure you out
The one you should have never thrown
But it's too late, too late to dry me out
On my shaky fingers
As the feeling fades away
In the heights of diamond
As I'm trying to find my way
And each one sinks in infamy
And I watch you watch me while I walk away
Did they forget to let you know
That everyone needs someone to betray?
But I might be dreaming
As the feeling fades away
In the heights of diamond
As I'm trying to find my way

Overall, this song is about the singer’s reluctance to end a relationship with someone that he loves, but which is ultimately not working out. There is a sunset theme throughout the song that paints the setting of the relationship beautifully.
Gravemaker, lay down your spade And come again some other day I'd rather watch the colors fade awhile
He knows he has to kill the relationship, but decides to put it off, and just watch what was once so beautiful disappear.
From pawnshop shades to balconies We'll paraphrase eternities And oh, the evolutions of your smile
Not sure about the pawnshop shades to balconies line- might have to do with certain memories he has with her or perhaps it could represent how they have grown with each other- from poor to rich. We’ll paraphrase eternities and oh the evolutions of your smile…. I think this refers to them planning a future together, skipping over the intricate details of building a life, and just discussing the things that make her happiness grow.
'Cause I'll still be coming As the daylight's drummin in And the feeling fades away
The chorus has to do with his reluctance to part from her, although he feels differently about the relationship since it began.
But the bells are chiming In the heights of diamond As I'm trying to find my way
The bells represents a call to action so to speak, much like how in Cinderella the clock chime meant it was time for her to go. I believe heights of diamond may refer to Diamond Heights in San Francisco since the band is from that area, but I’m not sure.
Silently, your secrets scrawled On paper cranes and bathroom walls But no-one's dared figure you out
This girl will write down her secrets and leave them in public and obscure places, but she will never talk to anyone about them. She’s somewhat closed off to the world about her feelings.
So you held me like a sinking stone The one you should have never thrown But it's too late, it’s too late to dry me out She holds on to him although he’s tried to get away because of her treatment of him in the past, but he can’t take it anymore.
'Cause your touch still lingers On my shaky fingers As the feeling fades away
He needs to leave, but knows he will have a hard time doing so.
And the bells are chiming In the heights of diamond As I'm trying to find my way
But it's sundown on the Western Sea And this one sinks in infamy And I watch you watch me while I walk away
The Western Sea reference is another reason why I think heights of diamond might relate to San Francisco. The sun has set for the last time on this relationship- he’s ending it. I love the last line- “ And I watch you watch me while I walk away”- he’s looking at her in a reflection of some sort as he leaves. It shows his reluctance and his bravery to leave this girl.
And it's pale light on the patio Did they forget to let you know That everyone needs someone to betray?
The girl is heartbroken- there is no more color or life in the relationship and she is stunned that it is over. She never expected that he would leave her.
Well my lode star is beaming But I might be dreaming As the feeling fades away
It’s finally dark outside and the relationship he was in with her is over, and although he’s still lost, the darkness of his world is what enables the lodestar to appear- the navigational beacon that will guide him to where he needs to go even though he can’t believe it’s over.
And the bells are chiming In the heights of diamond As I'm trying to find my way
