Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia) Lyrics
Every word's a new regret if you say it right
Every wound can be forgotten in the right light
Oh nostalgia, I don't need you any more
'Cause the salad days are over and the meat is at my door
They might try to tell you how you can live your life,
but don't forget it's your right to do whatever you like
'Cause you could be your own spotlight
(Eh-oh eh-oh) You could be your own spotlight
(Eh-oh eh-oh) You could be your own spotlight
You could be the star you could shine so bright
(Eh-oh eh-oh) You could be your own spotlight
Depression is a little bit like happy hour, right?
It's always got to be happening somewhere on any given night
Oh nostalgia, I don't need you any more
I just hope my perfect stranger that my kids look more like yours
'Cause I had a little bit of bad of luck
Under this crumbling world, stuck
A little sweetness keeps just out of reach
'Cause compassion is something that they just don't teach
'Cause you could be your own spotlight
Every wound can be forgotten in the right light
Oh nostalgia, I don't need you any more
'Cause the salad days are over and the meat is at my door
but don't forget it's your right to do whatever you like
'Cause you could be your own spotlight
(Eh-oh eh-oh) You could be your own spotlight
You could be the star you could shine so bright
(Eh-oh eh-oh) You could be your own spotlight
It's always got to be happening somewhere on any given night
Oh nostalgia, I don't need you any more
I just hope my perfect stranger that my kids look more like yours
Under this crumbling world, stuck
A little sweetness keeps just out of reach
'Cause compassion is something that they just don't teach
'Cause you could be your own spotlight

First off, I love both versions of this song, but I think I prefer "New Regrets" version just a tad bit more... I can't exactly place why... Anyways, my opinion is that this song is just basically about general change and independence. This is literally a very basic pop song. (I still like it very much, because I love Patrick's work) but my thoughts on it are very simple and the song is pretty self explanatory to me, but I'll break down what I get from it anyways... and it's just my opinion...
"every word's a new regret if you say it right" could mean that anything can be taken out of context, or be misunderstood
"every wound can be forgotten in the right light" could mean that there's always something that can take your mind off of a current situation or that there's always someone else out there with a worse situation...
"oh nostalgia I don't need you anymore" could mean that he doesn't need to try to go back to the way he used to be, or what he misses... he can be a new person now (and that could also be read into a bit deeper... like he doesn't have to be associated with Fall Out Boy just to do what he loves)
"cause the salad days are over and the meat is at my door" could be taken very literally about the weight loss that he's been through or possibly not being a vegan any more, but I like to look at it like he's saying that his options aren't limited any longer (to doing what the band needed/wanted him to do), his opportunities have just opened up
the chorus is strictly about independence to me so i won't elaborate
"depression is a little bit like happy hour right? it's always got to be happening somewhere on any given night" he could be saying that depression is over-rated, over diagnosed, over abundant and that there's too much of it going on and he doesn't need it in his life... or that's not what the big picture is about
"oh nostalgia I don't need you anymore. I just hope, my perfect stranger, that my kids look more like yours" the second part of this line is a bit tricky in the meaning for me, but the very first time i saw it when he posted it on his website, i just thought it was one of the most romantic things ever, in a very simple and literal way. He's saying to the person he wants to love and have children with that he wants their kids to look like her... a very beautiful way of saying, 'I want to be the father of your children/I love you'...?
I think this last little paragraph goes together very well, and could be explained all at once with the same message, but I’ll break it down by line anyways.
"cause I had a little bit of bad luck, no wonder this crumbling world's stuck" bad things can happen to anyone, and it’s no surprise that the world is the way it is today…
“a little sweetness keeps just out of reach” He can’t quite get what it is that he truly wants… maybe he loves someone that is still kind of stringing him along...?
“Cause compassion is something that they just don’t teach” A lot of people now-a-days are very selfish, and this could mean people as a whole, or a specific person. But someone isn’t seeing eye to eye with him and he doesn’t understand why they can’t empathize… why aren’t people able to? Why does it seem like no one cares to anymore?
I love this song! The Oh Nostalgia version is so much better than No Regrets, though, in my opinion. There's something a bit warmer about it.
The meaning of this song is rather obvious, so no need to go into it! He's doing just fine (better, I think) on his own!
isn't there a line missing at the end of the chorus?
"Cuz they’re gonna tell you all the rules to break to take away that light of somebody, somebody now"
that is, in the lyircs for the "new regrets" version. maybe if the author could specifiy which lyrics these are to?
either way, love this. so much. and i like new regrets better. i feel like its more soulful/r&b sounding which is what he's always aimed for, even if others may argue that its "top 40" material...great job patrick, i'll always support you
I like both versions, but New Regrets just a little bit more. They're both so good. I will always love Patrick.
I love love love this song. I don't know if I like the rest of the Truant Wave EP though... I've only listened to it once in the car though so it'll probably grow on me, it's much more soulful than Fall Out Boy. I'm so happy that Patrick is finally coming out with solo work, he's sooo talented. But I agree that I think this song could be a a reference to his time with Fall Out Boy. It always seemed like Pete tried to take over that band and overshadow everyone else. So I am soooo happy that Patrick is shining now and where's Pete.? Getting a divorce. Hahahaha.
preeeety sure it's not "salad days" ...it's "'Cause the silent days are over and the beat is at my door"

Refers to youth, when mistakes are made from lack of experience. Good quote from Mr. Stump though.
