Something You Misplaced

at a glance, the song is about two friends who are obliviously more than friends:

"maybe its something you misplaced"

she has "misplaced" her love, or in other words cannot develop feelings for any other guy.

"maybe i'll see it in your face, could you have left it in your coat? could you have left it in your coat?"

he questions that he might see her feelings for him in the way that she acts, because he has no clue as to where her love could be and why she cannot feel anything for anybody. he thinks the answer is right in front of her, maybe its just figuratively forgotten in her "coat"

"Maybe it's somewhere in a drawer Sometimes those things can get ignored I hadn't thought about it much I hadn't thought about it much"

he still thinks the answer is right in front of her, and he is starting to see that he and the girl have a stronger bond than he had thought, because he "hadn't thought about it much," with "it" being the possbility of the two of them as a couple

"But if your love returns to me If what's not, turns out to be Oh, you don't know No, you don't know"

here he actually starts to consider the possiblity that he is meant for her, that they just might be great as a couple, but they just can't be sure, they can't know

"I guess it started to make sense We were just sitting on the fence There wasn't writing on the wall There wasn't anything at all"

this is more elaboration on the realization of their potential as a couple, and talk about how they just spent time togehter without considering the possbility because there wasn't any apparent signs pointing to them being together

Thats just my initial interpretation, feel free to point out fallacies, please.

"sort of another topic that gets touched on alot in this record is doubt. you never really know where a relationship is headed, you never really know what someone else is thinking. also, i am insaaanely forgetful. i lose everything all the time. i don't leave the house with out looking for my wallet, phone and keys... each individually... for like 10 minutes each. on the new found glory tour last fall i set my computer bag down so i could chuck my suitcase into the trailer and then i happily got in the van and we drove away while my laptop, wallet, ipod, ext. hard drive etc etc sat on the sidewalk in super skecthy richmond, VA or somewhere (can't even remember what city it was). in our relationship, there was a moment or two (maybe just for 30 minutes before leaving the house on a few occasions) when it sorta seemed like our love fell out of a hole in our pockets and we were scrambling around looking for it. maybe a hobo found it and was using it to buy beer... maybe it ended up under a pile of adult diapers and hot dogs in some hoarders house and we'll see it uncovered on a&e... turns out my backpack was actually on my back the whole time and thats why i couldn't find it! isn't that always how it is?"
