Paper Lung Lyrics
It's too late
It's too late now,
to pry away, to pry away
The candle burns on both ends
so where does it leave us?
Standing emptier than we ever left you
With your head in the water, it's getting harder to breathe
So stand up, stand up
It's too late, to pry away
It's too late, to pry away
Don't get me wrong, im just as scared as you are now
They dropped us off here with no direction
But you never even tried to fight the current,
Watch the water pouring faster into your lungs
So breathe in, breathe in
It's too late to pry away
It's too late, to pry away
But its hard to hear me when you're sinking
Down here,
I wanna see you
wash it down, wash it down.
How can you sleep here? I bear the weight of the world
I dont believe it,
A single word you sold to me, sold to me
I bear your burden, for the last time I swear,
I'm done with all of this
Its too late, to pry you
Away from the undertow, I watch it take you, then I walk away
It's too late now,
to pry away, to pry away
so where does it leave us?
Standing emptier than we ever left you
With your head in the water, it's getting harder to breathe
So stand up, stand up
It's too late, to pry away
They dropped us off here with no direction
But you never even tried to fight the current,
Watch the water pouring faster into your lungs
So breathe in, breathe in
It's too late, to pry away
Down here,
wash it down, wash it down.
I dont believe it,
A single word you sold to me, sold to me
I'm done with all of this
Away from the undertow, I watch it take you, then I walk away

This song is obviously about struggling to deal with somebody else in our lives who keeps bringing us down through his or her actions. It's about our need to understand that sometimes we cannot save people from themselves and we must walk away.
The song reveals that the singer can no longer take the lies and excuses given by the other person, and that they can no longer deal with the problems the person brings. The singer resolves to walk away and let the person fend for his or herself.
Good song, very tough subject matter. I admire Spencer for reminding us that we can't always save others and sometimes we are in danger of being dragged down with them if we try.
I agree, excellent comment. Man, I love this song =D

Couple of corrections;
"Here I wanna see you wash it down, wash it down."
Sounds much more like
"Swim here I want to see you wash it down, wash it down.
"How can you sleep in a bed I dont believe it, A single word you sold to me, sold to me"
Sounds more like
"How can you sleep here? I've been... I dont believe it, a single word you sold to me."
Although I can't work out the last part of that first line.
And also I can't hear "A candle" in "A candle burning, for the last time I swear, I'm done with all your fears". It sounds almost like "like me/them you're burning...", but I'm still not 100% sure about that one.
thanks, i wasn't 100% sure with these either, just posted what I knew so far, I'll correct them tomorrow when the album is released and i pick up the CD

A person watching someone else go in the wrong direction I would tie it too the ways of the world due to the fact he simply says "you never even tried to fight the current," he knows that we are placed here under our own choices "They dropped us off here with no direction" but as this other person is falling and he's doing everything he can to help them, they aren't listening so finally when they hit rock bottom he walks away. which sounds harsh but you can't have people in your life who drag you down... just my thoughts
Good thoughts! To delve further into your theory, I think both of the people in the song are him. And he is dealing with pressure and doing things he knows are wrong, but in the end he has to leave that person behind so that he can become a better person

Actually, quick correction guys, the correct lyrics are: "How can you sleep here? I bear the weight of YOUR world." Out of the booklet ;D Anyway, <3 this song. Spencers voice is so awesome :D
its too late now that we've gotten into this mess, too late to get out time is running out (candle burning),....what do we do now we need you(god)now more than ever I'm scared just like you,our sins have brought us here( like an ocean)its like you're not even trying to fight it (swim against the current)and i watch as the sin grabs you(water rushes faster in your paper lung and you start to sink) and with your head in the water(other person),..scares me that you don't care and its getting harder to breathe, hard for me when you're sinking . how are you o k with this (how can you sleep here)I'm so guilty(feeling responsible to save you/weight of the world) i cant do this alone unless you try too so i'm walking away
This song is just plain amazing. Basically it's about someone trying to help a friend through something, but the friend is too far from reality to the point where he refuses to accept the help. Eventually at the end of the song it shows that he (Spencer) is just tired of trying and decides it's just no longer worth it. It's like "I tried to help you, but you wouldn't let me. So now, do whatever you want to yourself. I just don't care anymore".
At least that's what I got out of it.
The whole album is about either the end of the world or a worldwide catastrophe\crisis, so the songs aren't necessarily about relationships. If you watch the videos and read the lyrics of all the songs, they're all about how this terrible tragedy is happening in the world and it's caused by people. It's saying how people have strayed off onto the wrong path and have dug themselves into a whole that they can't get out of.
Well IMO, I think it's about someone who's given up about an existence of a higher being (something called God), or maybe not. Then again, it's just my opinion. Don't take it too seriously.
IF we can not hear god's voice we are sinking in sin and it just like we can't not swim because on one can't hear us down there
It's too late, it's too late now, To pry away, to pry away.
The candle burns on both ends, So where does it leave us? Standing emptier than we ever left you, With your head in the water it's getting harder to breathe, So stand up, stand up.
It's too late to pry away.
Don't get me wrong, I'm just as scared as you are now. They dropped us off here with no direction, But you never even tried to fight the current. Watch the water pouring faster into your lungs, So breathe in, breathe in.
It's too late to pry away.
But it's hard to hear me when you're sinking.
Swim here, I wanna see you, Wash it down, wash it down.
How can you sleep here? I've been... I dont believe it, a single word you sold to me.
...you're burning, for the last time, I swear I'm done with all your fears.
It's too late, to pry you away from the undertow, I watch it take you, then I walk away.
