Sail Lyrics

Sail
This is how I show my love
I made it in my mind because
Blame it on my ADD baby

This is how an angel dies
Blame it on my own sick pride
Blame it on my ADD baby

Sail, sail
Sail, sail, sail

Maybe I should cry for help
Maybe I should kill myself (like hell, like hell)
Blame it on my ADD baby

Maybe I'm a different breed
Maybe I'm not listening
So blame it on my ADD baby

Sail, sail
Sail, sail, sail

La la la la la, la la la la la, ohh
La la la la la, la la la la la, ohh
La la la la la, la la la la

Sail, sail
Sail, sail
Sail, sail
Sail, sail, sail

"this is how I show my love" - because he has ADD he shows his love in ways that might not be recognizable to those without experience with intellectual disabilities. While his actions might be interpreted as callous by others, it's still valid to him because that's how he shows his love even if it's different than how others might show their love.

"this is how an angel cries" - the love of his life is crying because he can't show her his love the way that she would expect that he would. People with intellectual disabilities often express things in ways that "normal" people would interpret as callous. If you didn't know that they had different brains you would be very hurt by their words or actions.

"Maybe I'm a different breed, maybe I'm not listening" - MAYBE is the key word here. He feels so apart from others, and especially the person that he loves, that he questions his own human-ness. His ADD makes him feel like he's so far from being human that he's not even human, and because of that she can't be the same breed that he is. MAYBE he's not listening - ADD people are often accused of not listening because they can't filter out background noise. He's trying to figure out whether it's that he won't listen or can't listen or just appears to not be listening.

"Maybe I should cry for help" - he wants to handle it himself and work it out, but she's not responding and he's wondering if he should do something to get others involved or draw attention to his ADD because he's wondering if he can handle the situation himself.

"Maybe I should kill myself" - he's wondering whether the pain that he inflicts on others as a result of his intellectual disability (this is how an angel cries) is worth it, especially since he's in a great deal of pain himself from not being able to meet her needs.

Sail - like the tone of the song creates a sense of lightness and freedom, like floating away. Both an expression of what he'd like to feel (ease, freedom, carefree) and what he is supposed to make a loved one feel like. Should he "sail" away by leaving her? Should he "sail" away by leaving earth? Should he "sail" away by killing himself? Should they "sail" together by her blaming his ADD for behaviour that she would not tolerate from a loved one?

Haha-- ADHD is not an "intellectual disability." People with ADD are often smarter/more creative than average. If anything, it is a "interest disability." People with ADD have trouble staying interested, motivated, and of course, attentive. It can be devastating to relationships (and almost every other facet of life, especially when you get older.)Other than that, I agree with a lot of what you thought this song means. Sorry for the after school special, but I thought it just sounded funny.

ADD is not an intellectual disability. Intellectual disability is the so-called non-offensive term for mental retardation. For example, used in a sentence, "Our politically correct society has become intellectually disabled."

Other than that, thanks for your good analysis.

This is transparently projection on the writer part. If you give love you do it for the other person. If you are "showing love" your way then you are deluded and simply justifying your own selfishness. If you really love you show it in universal ways. Honesty generosity gentleness forgiveness helpfulness etc etc

Your taking it to literally, He's using ADD as a cover up for something else, drinking, abuse, cheating.

it's more of a "Oh its not my fault! Blame it on my "ADD""

Song Meaning

i think it can be taken literally ADD can make interacting with other really hard

I personally agree with not taking it so literally. He says "blame it on my ADD" too much for me to take it literally. It seems like he's comparing his actions with the actions of a person with ADD. That's my take on it.

You have hit the nail on the head, I have ADHD and it really doesn't stop one from expressing their love etc. or interacting with others. People are taking the lyrics too literally, he is just using his ADD as an excuse for something and the fact that the line "Blame it on my ADD" is repeated so much reinforces this theory.

Being a future teacher, I like to think of this song as being about the increasingly misplaced blame being put on students for their inability to succeed in our current school system, specifically the rise of kids being wrongly diagnosed with ADD or other behavioral problems, or whose needs are not being met because of our refusal to recognize that it is not them, but us, that are problem.

The title "Sail" has the feeling that many of us had in school "just sail through" and just get by, doing no more than necessary to get a passing grade.

Especially the part: "Maybe I'm a different breed, maybe I'm not listening" seems reflective of how many students just don't fit into the mold and don't learn the same way, but are told by their teachers/parents that they aren't listening well enough or that they are just lazy.

Many students do “cry for help”, and many become suicidal and depressed because of the feelings of inadequacy/differentness caused by being told (directly and indirectly) that they aren't good enough or that they don't fit in.

The first part is harder to fit into my little theory, but when he says “this is how I show my love- made it in my mind because” I think of how much passion and curiosity is squashed by teachers and parents that don't recognize the unique talents of kids who might show their love/passion in different ways (music, art, sports), since those things never helped anyone pass a standardized test.

“This is how an angel cries”- reminds me of students who turn away from school/parents (drugs, gangs, violence etc.) because they weren't ever really given a chance to succeed or be themselves and because schools so often fail to recognize the complexities and impact of social issues, individuality, and the need for self-determination on students' lives.

But most teachers/schools/parents would rather just blame it on their ADD.

My Interpretation

THE VIDEO AND SONG IS ABOUT ALEIN ABDUCTION HELLO!!! ARE WE THAT BLIND???

I love you SarahW103. I was just about to post something similar but you said it so eloquently. I really think you nailed it.

Excellent! I don't know how many parents I've heard complain about their children who refuse to do homework yet ace their tests and they complain about how lazy and unmotivated their children are. Those are traits of a Gifted child. Schools without programs for Gifted & Talented children put gifted children who are exceptionally bright, yet learn differently, in with children who are average or overachievers and the gifted children are often in trouble for behavioral issues that are a result of boredom. They already comprehend the material and don't have the patience for the busy work while the other...

People are overlooking the fact that ADD has two meanings. There is obviously Attention Defeceit disorder, but the ADD the vocalist s referring to is Alcohol & Drug Dependancy. Doesn't that make more sense with the other references he makes in the song? Alcohol & Drug Dependancy affects people in a lot of ways, all of which are addressed subtley within the song. 'This is how I show my love, I made it in my mind' due to his drug-influenced train of thought. 'this is how an angel dies' because many influential people have died because of it. 'Maybe I should cry for help, maybe I should kill myself', all mindsets a person affected by Alchohol & Drug Dependancy goes through.

That is what I think Sail is about.

Song Meaning

according to urban dictionary, another meaning of the word sail is to take a hit of marijuana, so your explanation makes sense.

Thanks for getting the true meaning of ADD in this song. As a person who has recovered from alcohol & drug dependancy the first time I heard this song knew what he was saying. And it makes perfect sense in that context

Very well put. You have a very sound interpretation. Thank for enlightening me with your perception.

Please excuse my poor English, I’m from Germany. Or just blame it on my ADD. This is my very personal interpretation of this song, created with my own experiences. So you won’t exactly agree with it, but I think it is comprehensible. I think this song is about life with ADD and the problems with the “normal” world and in relationships.

  1. Apparently his relationship ended because his partner doesn’t understand him and thinks, due to his behavior, that he doesn’t love her. Many people with ADD are introverted and seem egoistically to others. Many things they want to do only happen in their heads, this is how I understand the second line.
  2. Maybe, he made her cry because of his sick pride. Sick pride perhaps, because he was too pride to admit that he loves her and what she really means to him. Maybe he was never able to say or show her, that he loves her, because he was scared of her getting too close. In the 3rd stanza he looks for a way out. How to cope with his ADD and this situation? Should he get some help or just kill himself?
  3. He feels like a different breed, many persons with ADD feel different or are seen as different. Maybe he is not listening, this was perhaps the trigger for their argument. In relationships with one part having ADD, the “normal” part often gets the feeling that his partner isn’t listening, not interested and not loving him/her. This is often a reason for the end of such relationships. Unlike most interpretations I’ve read here, I understand the word sail as the inability to fight against external circumstances, even if he is trying. Like a boat he always drifts where the wind is blowing. In the video he is sliding away, no matter if he is fighting against it or just resigning. In the end of the song, he is begging her to sail with him into the dark, because he doesn’t know where he is sailing and where the wind will blow him. He just wants her to accept him as he is and to stay with him, but I think he knows it is too much to ask for, because he sounds desperate. In my opinion you have to distinguish between the interpretation of the song and of the video, even if they have a close message. In the video he is hiding from the aliens in a small house. The house might be a metaphor for his brain, it looks like a typical ADD-house with piles of sheet and chaos — the recorder is under the bed, a lamp is placed on a pile of books, etc… so he tries to hide in his brain from the light and the aliens. A self-chosen isolation, typical for people with ADD. The light and the aliens perhaps stand for the outer world and the everyday life, which seem hostile and scary to him, a way many people with ADD or other disorders see the world. In the video there are some ways how he is trying to avoid that the outer world is getting him: running away, hiding in the bath tube (where he can’t see or hear anything) or playing music. But in the end, he will lose the fight, no matter what he is doing.
My Interpretation

Your interpretetion is very much appreciated. i dont know how to thank you so please blame it to my ADD :)

I have ADD, as well as Aspergers Syndrome and I'd say that everything you've said is true. Your opinions must be well-informed. I experience the emotions he's feeling on a daily basis.

Much appreciated. My only question is regarding how you interpreted it to a specific relationship or love interest? I am struggling to see this angle. For me, I viewed the song as an overall cry and expression of life/daily struggle. How we show our love, in my opinion, doesn't feel to match our realities in our own hearts/minds. It is certainly within relationships with partners, but I think it's in all our relationships. Perhaps, it is my ADD. I totally missed this angle of a specific external relationship. I also view the sail to be giving in as...

i think that hes just sick of everyone blaming things on him and on problems he has and stuff like that. he hasnt been accepted and hes not bothering to ask anyone for help because he feels that noone can help. wich is usually correct. so hes starting to feel like he needs to get away or hes going to die. his sick of the people where he is and how he feels when he is alone or around people. i relate because i feel the same way. hes sick of doctors and his parents blaming his issues on mental diseases like a.d.d. and noone else really believes that he has a problem much deepter. he says blame it on my a.d.d. i think that was a sarcastic command like oh just do it again. why not. its what youve always done. thats just what i think. he needs to sail away.

Excellent interpretation! Despite the lack of grammar, your description is spot on :D

@zaneytrix ADD is an EXTREMELY deep problem that ruins your entire life if it is severe enough

If this song wasn't written by an ENFP, I don't know what was.

Do you happen to be an INFP?

@Nyla456 A lot of people with ADD are ENTP or ENFP

I believe this song is about a guy who is suffering from mental illness. I think he is down on himself, doesn't know what to do about it. Doesn't think people understand. He struggles back and forth on what he believes/feels, and how others perceive it. When he says, "Maybe I'm a different breed", I think he means he is different, and its ok. Then it says, "Maybe I should kill myself", I think he feels misunderstood, and he is questioning himself, and his mind at this point, and thinks it will all go away, if he ends it. "Maybe I should cry for help." He knows he needs help to deal with his illness, but is probably to paranoid to do so. So, he just keeps sailing on, in his own way. Another note that makes me think of mental illness, is where it trails off with, "la, la, la, la, la, la, la....

Isn't it "this is how an angel dies"?

Cover art for Sail lyrics by Awolnation

This song is supposed to put the listener into the poetic experience of ADD, and the musician's overall frustration with the world. Notice how each stanza is purposely disconnected from the rest. Each stanza expresses a different feeling and thought that happens to enter his mind. What connects these thoughts is the existential angst from which they originate. Separating each verse is the escape from holding on to and continuing each line of thought, "Sail!" He is floating upon a world that doesn't understand him, and that he doesn't fully understand.

My Interpretation

I'd have to agree with the distinctive break up of the stanzas. I think they are meant to be seperate thoughts fleeting through his mind. The video emphasizes the random thoughts that he's gennerating and "classifying" as due to his ADD. The pictures on the wall are extremely random: 2 wolves fighting, what looks like a giesha, a soldier arming a big gun, a naked person curled up on the ground, and ET? OK ET is really several duplicate images of a person made to look like an alien, I think the eyes are the key there ;)

Also notice the orbiting planets with AN labeled on one and what looks like a stick figure on the middle one. Maybe his different spheres of thought floating around him. His desk seems to give an impression that he is in a state of nostalgia. Notice the items on it are a bit dated and then there is the book (funny thought, books themselves are dated) with some sort of writing, maybe Japanese or hyroglyphs. The page then turns to what looks like scribbles when the light shines in and then pictures start covering up and...
