A New Shore Lyrics
As captain of this band of merry sailors I’m a black mark I’m a failure
So before you watch me drown
I’m relinquishing command for something I don’t understand,
this man’s about to turn his whole life upside down
I set a course for a new shore
It looked the same as the one before
And I forgot what I’d been sailing for
And why I thought this time would be different
I do most of this by feel and let go of the wheel the constellations
Do the navigation on their own.
Whilst yearning for adventure, dreading censure in absentia,
I would rather be at sea than be alone
I set a course for a new shore
It looked the same as the one before
And I forgot what I’d been sailing for
And why I thought this time would be different
Off the charts we drew
They said there wasn’t anything but fairy tales
I told them it was you, I told them you were everything a fairy tale could be
The boat sails by
The shore remains and so do I
I swear this time will be different
I settled here on a new shore
My lips were blue and my legs were sore
And I forget if I was pushed or I jumped overboard
And after all this time, what’s the difference?
Land ho!
So before you watch me drown
I’m relinquishing command for something I don’t understand,
this man’s about to turn his whole life upside down
It looked the same as the one before
And I forgot what I’d been sailing for
And why I thought this time would be different
Do the navigation on their own.
Whilst yearning for adventure, dreading censure in absentia,
I would rather be at sea than be alone
It looked the same as the one before
And I forgot what I’d been sailing for
And why I thought this time would be different

I told them it was you, I told them you were everything a fairy tale could be
The boat sails by
The shore remains and so do I
I swear this time will be different
My lips were blue and my legs were sore
And I forget if I was pushed or I jumped overboard
And after all this time, what’s the difference?

This is clearly referring to Steve leaving Barenaked Ladies, kind of as a response to BnL's "You Run Away". Especially with the line "This man's about to turn his whole life upside down", which alludes to the BnL song "Upside Down".
While i agree the song is about leaving BNL and starting again, i think its a stretch to assume that a specific couple of words refer to a song of the same name... Steve is too subtle for that.

He said in an interview that it was sort of a response to Upside Down. But there's probably more to it than that.

I think Page is an amazing, perceptive, truthful songwriter and this album again proves it, but I've decided that Page One is really like salt & vinegar chips for me. Although I love the first few I eat, the taste eventually becomes overpowering and I have to put them aside for awhile. So too for this album. I'm just now pulling it out again after a year-long hiatus.

A curl of the lip there; a reflexive response to many of the songs on Page One. They're very... tangy.

Heh.
