Machinery of the Heavens Lyrics

Gotta keep on waiting for the morning hours
Watch them running by to where they’re going
‘Cause when you're upside down those nuts and bolts feel awfully strange
The crowds and moments feeling all the same

Are you tired in the morning, do you shout out loud?
Gotta keep on running when you're down
Gotta get out

Gotta keep away from all those empty hands
That suck up all your love and all your cares
Best to trade it all in for those old dancing shoes
And get rid of all the weight that has been holding you down
Keep your toes from tapping on the ground

But we didn't know where to go from here
No, we didn't know where to go from here
No, we didn't know where to go from here
‘Cause it all felt wrong
So we best be moving on
You better get out

In a crowd of people looking for a spark to catch
To put back in our mouths to set a flame

‘Cause I didn't know what to say to you
No, I didn't know what to say to you
No, I didn't know what to say to you

I was just about to pack it in
But then I heard the news that you that’d be here soon
So I sang

You brought it back to me
You gave it back to me
You brought me back the love

You gave it back to me
You brought it back to me

You gave it back to me
You brought me back the love

You brought me back the love

You brought it back to me
You gave it back to me
You brought me back the love

You gave it back to me
You brought it back to me

I love this song. There is so much to it both lyrically and musically.

It seems to me that it is a song about a lover that he became very close with. However, he was starting to feel that the relationship was slipping and that he might leave her, but then something horrible happened. The first verse,

"Got to keep on waiting for the morning hours Watch 'em run and buy their weighted coin 'Cause when you're upside down Those nuts and bolts feel awfully strange Cries and moans feelin' all the same Are you tired in the morning, do you shout out loud?"

gives me the impression that she might have been suffering from depression. She felt that life was unfair, watching everyone run around getting their share of life. She was 'upside down'. Her feelings were all the same. She was tired in the mornings and wanted to shout out loud. Tiredness and anger are common feelings that people suffering from depression have.

In the next verse he tries to soothe her. He tries to convince her to suck up all those bad feelings and all her cares and worries and go dancing along with everyone else. He says "We gotta get out". It also seems as though he thinks that some people were holding her down.

"Got to keep away from all those empty hands Suck up all you are and all your cares Best to trade it all in for those old dancin' shoes Get rid of all the ways guys have been holding you down Keep your dancing tapping on the ground"

Unfortunately, it seems she wasn't convinced and they didn't know where to go from there. There "summer flame" was gone. There was no luck trying to rekindle it. He was just about to give up on her and "pack it in" when he heard on the news from a police officer "blue suited soul" that she was dead.

He then goes into a long cry of ohhh ahhhs and begins to regret his choices. He "never meant to leave". Perhaps he feels partly responsible, "God we failed ya", since he used the word "we" rather than "they". He felt they were meant to be together "Kid we were meant to lead". Unfortunately it was too late.

Beautiful song and I imagine very difficult to share with people. Thank you Patrick for making your wonderful music and please never stop!
