Back to December Lyrics
I'm so glad you made time to see me
How's life, tell me, how's your family?
I haven't seen them in a while
You've been good, busier than ever
We small talk, work and the weather
Your guard is up and I know why
Because the last time you saw me will still burn in the back of your mind
You gave me roses and I left them there to die
So this is me swallowing my pride,
standin' in front of you, sayin' I'm sorry for that night
And I go back to December all the time
It turns out freedom aint nothin' but missin' you, wishin' I'd realized what I had when you were mine
I go back to December, turn around and make it alright
I go back to December all the time
These days I haven't been sleepin'
Stayin' up playin' back myself leavin'
When your birthday passed and I didn't call
And I think about summer, all the beautiful times
I watched you laughin' from the passenger side and
I realized I loved you in the fall
Then the cold came, the dark days when fear crept into my mind
You gave me all your love and all I gave you was goodbye
So this is me swallowing my pride, standin' in front of you, sayin' I'm sorry for that night
And I go back to December all the time
It turns out freedom aint nothin' but missin' you, wishin' I'd realized what I had when you were mine
I go back to December, turn around and change my own mind
I go back to December all the time
I miss your tan skin, your sweet smile
So good to me, so right
And how you held me in your arms that September night
The first time you ever saw me cry
Maybe this is wishful thinking
Probably mindless dreaming
If we loved again I swear I'd love you right
I'd go back in time and change it but I can't
So if the chain is on your door, I understand
This is me swallowing my pride, standin' in front of you, sayin' I'm sorry for that night
And I go back to December
It turns out freedom aint nothin' but missin' you, wishin' I'd realized what I had when you were mine
I go back to December, turn around and make it aright
i go back to December turn around and change my own mind
I go back to December all the time
All the time

I'm actually surprised by this new song. After Mine and Speak Now, I wasn't expecting this, and I really like it!
I think it shows a more humble side of Taylor that we rarely get to see in her songs. She's usually singing about how she was right and someone did her wrong (You're Not Sorry, Picture to Burn, Should Have Said No, Forever & Always, White Horse, etc), or how she's better than her crush's girlfriend(Speak Now, You Belong With Me). Here, she's acknowledging that she made mistakes and she's apologizing to the person she hurt. It actually reminds me of Breathe, which is one of my favorite songs.
The lyrics are pretty straightforward, written in Taylor's classic "storytelling" style, full of little details.
She's meeting with her ex and admitting that she wasn't treating him right when they were together.
Then she goes on to say that she remembers the moments they spent together, how it was fun in the beginning, how she realized she was in love with him and finally how she got scared and decided to leave him. This is the moment she keeps going back to in her mind. She wishes she could have known what he meant to her back when they were still together, before she broke up with him.
At the end of the song, she says that she misses him and that she wants to get back with him, but that she understands if he's scared of being hurt again.
Also, I love the way she sings, in particular at the end of the song... her voice is really soft and soothing, it's really pretty!
I know there are already many rumors about who she wrote this song for, but I don't want to speculate. For me, the point of the song is much more about realizing what you have before it's too late than about trying to guess which of her ex-boyfriend this song is about.

I agree this is probably the only song in which she is apologizin ot someone. It's really nice.

I agree great song with great lyrics. Reminds of when I left my girlfriend. Left in december. I go back to december all the time. The lyrics speak exactly what i want to say to her all the time. I wish I'd never left her and I regret every day since December. Missing her is exactly that not freedom.

Damnit, Me and this girl got together last December, and it didn't last long. But I was IN LOVE with this girl...
-we started talking again in September
Taylor Swift was her favorite...
She has a Boyfriend now... FML.
Maybe this will take her "Back to December"... 8th to be exact...
I miss you... :(
I think this song is about Taylor Swift leaving her boyfriend to explore other options, and then realizing that she still wants to be with her ex. She wants to get back with him, but can understand why he wouldn't want too if he chose not too, because she's the one who left in the first place. I think the song is pretty much summed up in two lines.
"It turns out freedom aint nothin' but missin' you, wishin' I'd realized what I had when you were mine"
Freedom is what she wanted. Other options. But it turns out it wasn't worth it, because even though she has the freedom to explore other options, she spends her time missing her ex and wishing she was still back with him. The song is a storyline of their relationship and how she wishes she could go "Back to December" and decide to stay with him instead of leaving.
"I'd go back in time and change it but I can't, so if the chain is on your door, I understand"
This is the other line. This is her wishing she could go back to when she dumped her boyfriend and take it back but realizing she can't. She knows shes hurt him in the past when she dumped him so she understands if he has "chains on his door" meaning he doesn't want to take her back in fear of getting hurt again because he loved her so much and it went nowhere.
Just my interpretation.
I think what makes this song so special is that I can't think of another Swift song where she's actually APOLOGISING to anyone, be it a famous movie actor or not. She's usually moaning about a boy or saying how much she loves him, so this is refreshing to hear.
This song is obviously about taylor apologizing to Taylor Lautner for breaking his heart. Its such a lovely song, I love its lyrics.
In my opinion this is one of the best written songs from Taylor ever! I agree with Delrinnx269, she wanted freedom and regretted that decision, because she still wants him and misses him.
Perfect song, I can relate. And what makes this even better is that I'm 99.9% sure its about Taylor Lautner, ahhhhh I love them ♥
Love this song!
Does anyone think it's "texting" instead of "tan skin" ?
I think it's intense gleam
I think it's intense gleam
This song is completely about Taylor Lautner, they broke up in December because she didn't appreciate him and thought he was "smothering" her. I was at her concert last fall and Taylor Lautner was in the audience, he was just staring in awe at her she sang, you could tell he was crazy about her. I think this song was written when she realized this fact too late.
I always thought her relationship with Lautner was a publicity stunt, but I guess not. :(
