I think this is one of those songs with lyrics that everyone will probably interpret slightly differently. To me, it is about feeling in that bleak in-between place. You've been feeling kind of down and empty for a while, so it's more than just sadness, but it's not bad enough, or been going on long enough to be diagnosed as Depression. It could also be about the onset of Depression. You just don't have the appetite for life anymore, so you feel empty and nothing seems worth talking about or doing.
