Short Note Lyrics

Just a short note
You'll find the key inside
There's no one home tonight
But come in anyway

The shallow sea
Calm, but not asleep
You're gonna wade into the deep
Tomorrow's years away

And now I know
Why darkness makes me smile
The night will have its child
And the wind will wind away
The wind will wind away

Until you're telling your friends we died
Laughing still
But the vessel that you fill
Will be your own

Wade into the deep
How much can you see,
Before we're all the same

Those words I wrote
I see my errors now
There's too much when and how
And you blow it anyway

The shallow sea
Calm, but not asleep
You're gonna wade into the deep
Tomorrow's years away
Every day, every day, every day

And now I know
Why darkness makes me smile
The night will have it's child
And we'll all just blow away
Just watch us blow away

Until you're telling your friends we died
Laughing still
But the vessel that you fill
Will be your own

Wade into the deep
How much can you see
Before we're all the same
Show me

This song is a perfect example of how the same lyrics and music can mean different things at different times of your life. When it first came out in 1981? I was 22 and at a crossroads in my life. From the first time I heard it it touched my emotions in a way that nothing had before. The first line and the way it is sung was enough to send me into a place I hadn’t been before. A place that I knew would come when I’d grown up. That place of resignation and acceptance of the endings in relationships without the anger and confusion. The next 40 years has past and again at a crossroads, A long term love relationship ending. The song came back by chance and gave me that reminder. You can try and explain things, work things out, who, what, why but in matters of love they are meaningless musings and can never be understood by anyone else except the hurt child within. Love this song and although it fills me with the joy and the pain of love, it never leaves me empty.

@davidl59 This song just popped up again last night and I instantly had to hear it again. Although hearing it as a late teen, parts of the lyrics resonating with me I never took the time to explore its meaning although the feeling of melancholy was experienced, maybe a hidden message of my life? I like your description and what it has meant to you, I think it could be a mirror to mine? This song is definitely going to that "special" list for when I'm alone and reflecting
