Seems desperate to know God on a personal level. The first part definitely talks about catching the end of a church service. There's probably some guilt associated, brought on by a parental figure.
The person singing the song is talking directly to God in the bridge "Oh God I'm out on my own now, Oh God so fearful and cold now". This seems to me to be the plea of someone who has given up on being part of a church and instead is thinking "God are you there? Please talk to me if you're real". I can relate to this song because I tried to do the whole "I don't need a church to get in touch with God" thing but I didn't know enough about him to do it on my own....
