Send Me the Moon Lyrics

Holding my breath
Last one I've got left
I see you

Deliver my heart with the
Pieces and parts of me - that
Every last day seemed to carry away
A life time
Watch from the ground
As the gold fluttered down from the sky

Sweet sun
Send me the moon
Empty the skies out
Bringing me one step closer to you
Send it soon
And I will breathe in, breathe out
'Til you come in and out
Of you
Of you

Inches away from you
Scared what I'll take from you, darling
I can live with your ghost
If you say that's the most that I'll get

Darkness to light
Moved from day into night to be near you
Still here I stand
I am sinking like sand in your sea

Sweet sun
Send me the moon
Empty the skies out
Bringing me one step closer to you
Send it soon
And I will breathe in, breathe out
'Til you come in and out
Of you

You already do

Never you mind where the evening should find us
Together
Distance can't take what is hidden here
Safe in my chest

I'll wait for the day when
We finally say now or never
'Til then I'll be here wanting more
As I settle for atmosphere

Sweet sun
Send me the moon
Empty the skies out
Bringing me one step closer to you
Send it soon
And I will breathe in, breathe out
'Til you come in and out
Of you
Of you

Sara B. is amazing, but this is possibly one of my favorites from her. There is something about it that is addicting and almost haunting, and leaves you a little breathless. It's one of those songs I've kept on repeat for hours. I think part of this is because I can relate to every single line in this song, so it tugs at my heart strings in ways many other songs can't. I think that fact that she uses the metaphor of nature, the sun, the moon, the sky, makes it painstakingly beautiful. The first line of this song reminds me of another one of my favorites out there..."I have been holding my breath, for too many nights in a row. And somewhere on coastlines unknown to me you paint your dreams, in reds and blues and greens." I'm so glad Sara B. decided to release this song, even if it wasn't on Kaleidescope Heart.

Also, given that I've listened to this song over 200 times, I have some lyric corrections (with *):

Holding my breath Last one I've got left 'til* I see you

Deliver my heart with the Pieces and parts of me left Every last day seemed to carry the weight of a lifetime Watch from the ground As the gold fluttered down from the sky

Sweet sun Send me the moon Empty the skies out Bringing me one step closer to you Send it soon And I will breathe in, breathe out 'Til you come in and out Of view Of view

Inches away from you Scared what I'll take from you, dark* I can live with your ghost If you say that's the most that I'll get

Darkness to light Moved from day into night to be near you Still here I stand I am sinking like sand in your sea

Sweet sun Send me the moon Empty the skies out Bringing me one step closer to you Send it soon And I will breathe in, breathe out 'Til you come in and out Of view*

You already do

Never you mind where the evening should find us together Distance can't take what is hidden here safe in my chest

I'll wait for the day when we finally say now or never 'Til then I'll be here wanting more As I settle for atmosphere

Sweet sun Send me the moon Empty the skies out Bringing me one step closer to you Send it soon And I will breathe in, breathe out 'Til you come in and out I will breathe in, breathe out 'til you come in I will breathe in, breathe out 'til you come in and out Of view Of view

I'm so disapointed...grooveshark no longer has this beautiful song availiable :( What I also love about this song is that some words can be heard differently. Atmosphere = at most fear, and just to be near you darling sounds like just to be near you dark. Anywho, lovely interpretation!

"Of view" makes literal sense, especially with the temporality of the moon. But "of you" can work if "come in" is its own sentence as in "come in to my space." "Come out of you" can be if she is referring to the moon as messenger of the sun. This way, she can gain "one step closer to [it]" (because moon can be stared at, sun can't be.. unless she's into one day relationships). Plus, the 'I' that is her cannot be too involved if the 'you' refuses to leave 'you.'...

One more thing I would like to add- Sara mentioned in an interview that this song was written for the movie "Dear John," but was never used (no idea why since it's amazing!).
In the movie, the moon is a constant reminder to the two main characters of each other, which is really ties this whole song together with the chorus quite beautifully. Just thought it was interesting and wanted to share :)

I thought I could not be more in love with the song's poetic essence, but the musical sweetness makes me giddy enough to question that. The central image deals with a concrete "fact" (that being the powerful, mammoth 'sun') projecting an interaction (such as the moon) to an observer on the ground.

Amid this ethereality, the observer focuses on the state of waiting, where patience and artistry is vital for survival.

The pivotal moment for the poem is brought by the realization that the sun already projects into the observer's life. Thus the next lines: "Never you mind whether evening should find us together, / Distance can't take what is hidden here safe in my chest."

Love.

I think the opening verse goes something more like this:

Holding my breath Last one I've got left Till I see you Deliver my heart With the pieces and parts of me left

Every last day seemed to carry the weight Of a lifetime I watch from the ground As the gold fluttered down From the sky

--

This song sounds like heaven to me. Pure and heartfelt. There's a kind of yearning that's softened by a peace and patience that permeates every second of this song, and I love it. And what better way is there to paint a picture of a sunset without actually saying what it is?

you're response is poetic. i agree, it is truly pure beauty.

Beautifally stunning how she can apply ethereal qualities to anguish in a way that seems to rebuke time, while subsequently yearning for the night, endearing that cycle which "carries the weight of a lifetime." Such concise verbage revealing multiple meanings, depending upon whose ears they fall upon. While at first I thought this a wistful love song, the melody is not congruent with the staggering emotions of unrequited love, so this leads me to feel this is more of a love affair with the night, where thoughts are "emptied out" and the heart is "delivered" from all that is expected from the "sweet sun," the day to day, where small breaths are stifled, and only released ("breathe in, breathe out") in the company of the moon. However, there is a subtle hint of yearning that permeates the entire song, which suggests a longing for more than the moon, with where she "sinks like sand" alone in the night. The humbling awe of the heavens, and the distance between, evokes resemblance of dreams that only the moon could know, dreams so far away, awaiting decision, yet contained by atmosphere (at most fear). Yet eager to merge the self with reality, "darkness to light, moved from day into night" to be near integrity, those dreams cannot be deterred!

True literary, musical, and vocal talent this Ms. Bareilles! So nice to see some modern depth!

I think the song is about being away from your lover. A long distance relationship of some sort (whether it be physically or metaphorically).
