Excess Energies Lyrics

I never felt so cheap in my whole life
I am only seventeen
someone kick me in the teeth
I could use some enemies
I have excess energies

My ID says twenty-one
I get smart when I get drunk
I am not my father's son
Watch me undo what he's done

Here I slip past thirty-five
jesus christ, you know I've tried
I'm so broke and I'm so tired

Was it worth it?
Yeah it's worth it
I'm not worthless
I'm wasting my time
I don't mind
Cause I can curse this
Or I can burn this to the ground
I can turn this thing around
watch me wear some crippled crown
I don't mind
I'm wasting my time
but I can curse this
or I can burn this to the ground
or I can turn this thing around

On the day that I will die
They won't pray and they won't cry
None who know me can deny
I defy what rests inside

Time and purpose I defy you
All my life
you know
was it worth it?
Yeah it's worth it
I'm not worthless
I'm wasting my time
I don't mind
Cause I can curse this
Or I can burn this to the ground
I can turn this thing around
watch me wear some crippled crown

Time and purpose I defy you
All my life you know I've tried to
Time and purpose I defy you
All my life you know I've tried to
Time and purpose I defy you
All my life you know I've tried to
Time and purpose I defy you

Cover art for Excess Energies lyrics by Les Savy Fav

Great song; hits a bit too close to home. To me, the song seems to be about a wasted life and the rationalizations used to mask those feelings. Forestalling change with endless distractions and a belief that you can change things around at any time; you just don't feel like doing so right now.

Time and purpose I defy you All my life you know I've tried to

We can't actually defy the passage of time, so stop acting like you're immortal and actually live the one life you have instead of being a spectator. Easier said than done. In that way, reminds me of Beach Boys - I Know There's an Answer, though a lot more defiant and from the perspective of the person living as a spectator, instead of advice from one who used to be a spectator.
