Little River Lyrics

Well there is something 'bout the quiet, uplifting laughter
You've just spent so many years chased by a cloud, oh
It's taken you so far, far past the cliff's edge
And now your feet just poke around to feel the ground, oh

You say "is this a joke," I float "come on now"
you see there's something down below
Just let me fall to be of use, make me the rainstorm
Just a piece of hail, you know

You said, "all the time it needs to take
and all the time there is a shiver from some fallen tear
but is it on this lack of fallen luck
to dream of things like a little river to the golden ground?"

And there is something 'bout the quiet surprise in darkness
You just sing about your own death in your closet
You stumble out into the pitch-black hallway
you think you've lost so many times though it's not war yet

You say "are these my eyes?"
You said "come on now, already lost my sense to feel"
But there is always someone out there who will listen
And then there's nothing but a dream

You said, "all the time it needs to take
and all the time there is a shiver from some fallen tear
but is it on this lack of fallen luck
to dream of things like a little river to the golden ground?"

And there is something 'bout the leaving of a lover
You think you knew through all the year's you've been a woman
And he's stepping out and walks out of the garden
Where all the lilies and all the weeds came from his cold hand
You say "is this my life," you said "come on now"
You see the diamonds when you yell,
that let you stay in all the corners I have been here
but now you travel, go to hell

You said, "all the time it needs to take
and all the time there is a shiver from some fallen tear
but is it on this lack of fallen luck
to dream of things like a little river to the golden ground?"

I think it should be "is it honest like a falling log to dream of things like..."

...and also wouldn't it make more sense if the part in the second verse was: you say "is this joke i float" "come on now"

So the person who lost his/her grip ask herself if it's a joke or if he/she floats past the cliff's edge and then the narrator (or whoever) answers "come on now, you see there's something down below..."

There's an error in your lyrics at least I'm pretty close to certain the line is "Is it honest like a fallen log"- not "is it on this lack of fallen luck."

Great I can't delete my previous message as it seems it was mentioned in the second comment. However to put my interpretation on display, it seems to be about the faults of escapism as a path to joy- or better yet that when taking a path there deceptions that come along with it. Especially the line, "Is it honest like a fallen log to dream of things like a little river to the golden ground?" the characters of the song mentioned seem to be asking for an easy way to joy, an easy and clear path or sign that will lead them somewhere without there being deception.

great tune

"There is something about the leaving of a lover, you think you knew through all the years you'd been a woman..."

That line gets me every time. I think the song is about someone coming to some sort of realization in their life, realizing that everything they'd previously believed/felt to be true just isn't like they'd thought it was.

Jinks, I think "I float" is referring to floating a suggestion, not literally floating, but I may be wrong.

In the chorus, there should be a comma between "all this time" and "it needs to take." As in, after all this time this relationship has to work. "All this time, it needs to take."

I wonder if there´s a connection with this song and "The Gardener".

"And he's stepping out and walks out of the garden Where all the lilies and all the weeds came from his cold hand"

I guess there's no TTMOE-fans who hasn't heard that song, so the connection could be poosible. Maybe this is about the "babe" from that song. And we know that Mr. Gardener from before is one cold-hearted bastard and a liar, right? As well as the gardener in this song (Well, I assume he's a gardener in this song too cause the lyrics sort of implies that.)

Beautiful lyrics none the less.

I think it's "but is it on us like a fallen log..." like a burden? Just a guess.

i think its "is it honest like a father in law" not "on this lack of fallen luck"
