I agree with your comment regarding the content of the song too. Someone lost self confidence or is faced with difficult situations he/she might not have been in before. The advice to fight and keep going is the best one you can give. For me this is given to an old friend or to a girl which still means something to him.

When Johnny was 15 his father died from alcoholism. I'm sure that has alot to do with the meaning behind this song.
