So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Too late, this is not the answer
I need to pack it in
I can't pull your heart together with just my voice alone
A thousand shards of glass I came to meet you in
You cut the peace out of me
And as you ripped it all apart
That's when I turned to watch you
And as the light in you went dark
I saw you turn to shadow
If you would salvage some part of you that once knew love
But I'm losing this
And I'm losing you
Oh I've gotta turn and run
The places that you never see
Oh I've gotta save my blood
From all that you've broken
Pack up these pieces of me
It's too late now to stop the process
This was your choice you let it in
This double life you lead is eating you up from within
A thousand shards of glass you pushed beneath my skin
And left me lying there to bleed
And as you showed my your scars
I only held you closer
But as the light in you went dark I saw you turn over
I wanted always to be there for you and close to you
But I'm losing this
And I'm losing you
Oh I've gotta turn and run
The places that you never see
Oh I've gotta save my blood
From all that you've broken
Pack up these pieces of me
These broken pieces
Pack up these pieces of me
These broken pieces
Pack up these pieces
Maybe without me
You'll return to all the beauty I once knew
But if I stay I know
We will both be drowned by you holding on to me
Oh I've gotta turn and run
From faces that you never see
Oh I've gotta save my blood
From all that you've broken
Pack up these pieces of me
These broken pieces
Pack up these pieces of me
These broken pieces
Pack up these pieces of me
I need to pack it in

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.
Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Fast Car

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Mountain Song

Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
To me it seems like a relationship where she is seeing a different side of someone that she fell in love of with. She wants to love him and remember him as she originally saw him, but cant do it. It reminds me of either an abusive relationship or a relatinoship where he was cheating.
You guys are partially correct. This song is about her seeing a darker side of someone she loves, but I don't think it's an abusive relationship or a cheating lover. In fact, I'm not sure it's a lover at all, but perhaps a very close friend. She is trying to cope with a darkness that has overcome this person she loves, a darkness like intense depression or drug abuse. She's realizing that she can't fix this person all by herself, and likewise, the love that she has for this person can fix him/her, and that this person must fix him/herself. She's realizing that she needs to let this person go before his/her darkness consumes her own life.
actually, you're both partially correct, but its actually a little different.
apocalyptica is trying to tell a story through their music videos. there's two versions of the song "not good enough", one feat. brent smith, and one feat. doug robb. they were both cheated on, i think by the same girl. in the music video, there is a girl in a big veil and dramatic dress and she lies there. in the very end of the video, lacey comes and looks over the "cheater" lying there. its the very same clip of the beginning of the video for broken pieces, where lacey comes to look over her and then begins carrying her and dragging her. lacey is representing the cheater, who is her friend, and singing from her point of view about why the she felt the need to cheat: because she felt she was losing him and was seeing a darker side of him.
hope this helped (:
