I had a friend named Pearl who died this year.
When I heard this song I had tears, especially the lines...
"But I woke up and grew strong And I can still go on And no one can take my pearl"
I understand what she's trying to say with the relationship bit, but I guess that's why words are so great. They mean different things to different people. This song makes me remember my friend. The memory of her life lives on.
I think this song is about when you get seriously hurt by your ex and you just feel so weak and lose all the strength you once had because you cared about that person so much. This song is my favorite on the album =).

I think to me, It is like the relationship I was in a few months ago. It lasted almost 2 years and I loved him with all my heart, but he was controlling and paranoid and it changed me completely. I lost all my friends and lost my life, I moved out and movedin with him, I thre my whole life away to be with him. The relationship wasn't healthy at all and in hindsight, i'm glad to be out of there, but when he told me to go home and when I did, It broke my heart into pieces.
This song relates to all that perfectly. I was a pearl, but then just a shell. But now I won't let anyone take my pearl again. Thank you, Katy :3
To me, this song is about losing yourself in a relationship. "She is a pyramid, but with him she's just a grain of sand". Normally she is strong willed and independent but within the relationship she's lost a part of herself and is just a shadow of what she used to be . I especially like the part "Yeah I used to be a shell, I let him rule my world", especially because I was in a situation similar to this..I relied all my happiness on him and essentially let him rule my world even though he didn't treat me very well. We aren't together anymore, and I'm slowly getting my pearl back, and I feel great and better off without him. Realize your self-worth, and the fact that YOU rule your world and your happiness!

I think it's about being in an abusive relationship. The woman used to be a pyramid, a hurricane, unstoppable, etc, but the relationship makes her a grain of sand, a gust of wind, etc. She's not the same person anymore, she's a shell. Basically it changed her from this strong, independent woman to a weak, vulnerable one.
My favorite part is when Katy sings about how she used to be a shell, but she turned herself back into a pearl. And the very last lyric "she is unstoppable", gives hope that the woman in this song left the abusive man and turned back into a pearl.
I think this is about Rihanna and Chris Brown. Just my opinion though.
this reminds me of my relationship. like, i used to be strong and when i got with him he controlled me and i went with it. my friends noticed it, but i didn't care. i just wanted to be with him. and i lost all the strength i used to have. i was completely in the dark because i didn't realize what he was doing to me. i didn't do anything without him. and when he broke it off, i was heartbroken. and then months later i now realize what he did to me. and i hate him for it. this is completely what this song is about.
