I have no evidence or support behind this, but I was thinking it could possibly be some sort of reinforcement to "not break apart" the words NOT and BROKEN. There could be another reason but that is just what I thought of as a possible reason.

i think it could be talking about having a relationship with someone in the military

John's said in many interviews was that this song was written as a love letter that he wrote on behalf of a woman he met in a meet and greet who told him about her husband who was injured in the war and he was too ashamed to come home from the hospital because he felt that he wasn't whole even though she loved him just the same. Hope that helps. :)
