Please, Head North

"After tonight I just can't be alone driving home beneath the stoplights They’re holding me in suspense But that’s just the way it is I guess"

This is the breakup and he's saying he can't be alone not after that, he needs to be with someone specifically the girl who left him. The stoplights are almost like denial in it all and they're holding him in suspense because he's waiting for them to turn green, like he's waiting for her to turn around and say it was cruel joke- that she's not leaving, but she already left in reality.

"For those of us who move too fast And I wish that I could say That I'm wishing you the best But I can’t, but I can't"

They say time flies when you're having fun, which is basically the first line. It went by too fast and he wants to wish her the very best because he wants her to be happy but he can't because he wants to be selfish and have her at the same time, despite her wants and needs.

"So I’ll write it out on paper to remember every word For all the things I’ve lost and found inside of every verse"

He'll write it all down like in a song or a diary in order to remember everything they've been through, like he has done numerous of other times in other songs or "verses" he has written.

"These are my directions to you: Please head north"

Please head north- the north star leads home. Please come home to me.

This has happened before and will probably happen again therefore he's saying it's like a curse he has. He wants to hope for the best and he is, but he knows that probably isn't what is going to happen and has to prepare for disappointment and pain.

"Maybe I was right, maybe I was wrong (So please, head north) I just can’t write another one of these summer songs (So please, head north) Oh please not another sad, sad song, You’ll find me hanging on every word"

It doesn't matter if he was right or wrong at this point, they're still over (perhaps from a fight they had). Summer songs are usually happy and since he is no longer so he can't write them anymore, but he also doesn't want to write those sad, sad songs because they're sad, and he doesn't want to be in that state although he is.

"It kills you to know that this world, it owes you nothing So just forget what you’re expecting You’ll find half what you deserve"

The world is cruel and you'll never get what you want or you deserve in life.
