The song deals with trust issues...fear of giving oneself to others for they may turn on you. He's trying to convince himeself not to care...to just have a fun life and not become attached to anyone. Love will eventuallly "plateau" and that scares him. He would rather strike (burn bridges)because he at least has some control; he's not dependent upon anyone. But the lyrics indicate he's trying awfully hard to convince himself that this is the life he wishes to lead...a life of no emotional ties.
