Lost In My Mind Lyrics
Put your dreams away for now
I won't see you for some time
I am lost in my mind
I get lost in my mind
Momma once told me
You're already home where you feel love
I am lost in my mind
I get lost in my mind
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh my brother
Your wisdom is older than me
Oh my brother
Don't you worry 'bout me
Don't you worry
Don't you worry, don't worry about me
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
How's that bricklayin' coming
How's your engine running
Is that bridge getting built
Are your hands getting filled
Won't you tell me my brother
'Cause there are stars up above
We can start moving forward
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
How's that bricklayin' coming
How's your engine running
Is that bridge getting built
Are your hands getting filled
Won't you tell me my brother
'Cause there are stars up above
We can start moving forward
Lost in my mind
Lost in my mind
Oh I get lost in my mind
Lost, I get lost, I get lost in my mind
Lost in my mind
Yes I get lost in my mind
Lost, I get lost, I get lost
Oh I get lost
Oh I get
I won't see you for some time
I am lost in my mind
I get lost in my mind
You're already home where you feel love
I am lost in my mind
I get lost in my mind
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Your wisdom is older than me
Oh my brother
Don't you worry 'bout me
Don't you worry, don't worry about me
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
How's your engine running
Is that bridge getting built
Are your hands getting filled

Oh oh oh oh
Oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
How's your engine running

Lost in my mind
Oh I get lost in my mind
Lost, I get lost, I get lost in my mind
Lost in my mind
Yes I get lost in my mind
Lost, I get lost, I get lost
Oh I get

I think this song is about thinking too much and worrying about the future instead of living in the present. The singer is writing the song for himself telling himself to stop making plans for the future and to live in the moment "Put your dreams away for now/ I won’t see you for some time".
He knows he shouldnt do it "Momma once told me/ You’re already home where you feel love". Being loved should be enough, but the singer is always looking forward and making plans instead of focusing on what he is doing or the people around him who care about him.
The chorus, "How’s that bricklayin’ coming/ How’s your engine running/ Is that bridge getting built/ Are your hands getting filled?" he's asking himself if he is focused on what he's currently doing and not off in thought of what lies ahead. He seems to get suck and dreams of what to do next instead of moving forward.
This is a message that we are hearing everywhere, as part of a universal download for those who are paying attention. Our call to action has us living within our awakening individual and collective imaginations, where good thinks and things are possible. It's a fun playground, worthy of my time and energy. You are my big Bro, my "example", living with all the trappings of importance and success; and yet you are so consumed by the man-made distractions and busy-ness of your reality, that you don't even notice the AMAZING natural world we are all part of, nor do you see the beauty of our splendid Garden Planet. Well, I have figured out how to plug into the universe, expanding my intentions in rich ways, and holding my arms open to receive the gifts the universe sends my way, in return. So if you'll excuse me, I've got someplace I'd much rather be. If you ever glance up and see the stars, and know wonder, THEN we will have something to talk about. So I am detaching with love, and bid you adieu so that I can go play in this world that is made of my hopes and dreams.
I heard this song yesterday while driving to the beach, and it nearly brought me to tears given how far away I've been from my brothers for the past few years. Needless to say, I bought the album immediately afterwards. I've been listening to this song on repeat for the past 15 minutes and felt compelled to leave my interpretation on here.
Family dynamics and the differences of personalities, finding passion in life, and being separated from the ones you love all or having lost loved ones could all play into this song.
The opening verse nails home the fact that he is a dreamer more than a doer. He has constantly been finding himself being consumed by his own thoughts, but I feel something has happened to make him stop and question his ways when he says "Put your dreams away for now, I won't see them for sometime."
Given the content of the second verse, it leads me to think that they lost their mother. Her advice that she dispensed has a vague timeline. It could of been yesterday or it could have been years ago.
Assuming the loss of their mother, his world is quite shaken and he is caught in a dilemma: continue searching for his passion and looking to the "stars up above" or start living a responsible life as a "bricklayer." His mothers support is gone with her death, which can leave many feeling like they are walking a tightrope without a safety net.
So he seeks the advice of his "older" brother whom he respects and values. He perceives his brother to have superior wisdom (Oh my brother your wisdom is all that I need). Despite their differences in character, his brother being a doer and he being a dreamer, the problems that he has brought up is concerning to his brother. He reassures him (Oh my brother don't you worry about me) and asks his brother how work is going (how's that bricklaying coming?), how he is doing (how's that engine running), how he's holding up/how his dealing with the loss (is that bridge getting built?) and most importantly if his life is bringing him fulfillment (Are your hands getting filled). I believe that to him he perceives his brother to be so stable, and given the high esteem he holds him, finds that emulating his brothers life may not be a bad option. But deep down I think he knows that it doesn't matter the answers his brother gives, hence why those questions were never answered by his brother in this song. He knows that those stars up above will continually taunt him and that resignation to a life similar to his brothers would be a defamation to his mothers death and legacy for he would never be happy with that life, and without personal happiness he could never feel love from others and he would continually feel lost and "homeless."
He accepts that his mother is gone and that it is okay to move on (We can start moving forward). He resolves to continue his quest to find his passion, knowing that it will leave him stagnant and inside his own mind for some time. However, he also knows that once he does find his passion it will mean so much more having overcome such a tragedy and to have not relented his desires to a "responsible" life out of fear of failure.
I had a similar experience when I first heard this song, and I feel it tells a story about family that is very distinct for me. I feel that its the baby of the family with the over protective mother, being lost on the way, and looking to their older brother, who seems to be the "Type A" personality, for direction. In this though there's a disconnection between the siblings, possibly where the older resents the younger for being irresponsible and lost. The younger wants to forget these misgivings and move on.

I see it as we need to be ready to put everything behind us and do what makes us happy. saying "hows that brick laying coming? Hows your engine running?..." etc, he's asking you to be honest and say whether or not you are satisfied with the kind of conventional life you may be living, because if you aren't then we can move past this part in our lives. "We can start moving forward."
I find this song to be more of a... Tongue in cheek way of saying something to his brother. Something like "You said I couldn't do this, but look at you. You got a desk job, is it giving you more than I got?"
I think this song is about someone who a dreamer and everyone is trying to give them advice and kind of real them in.
Everyone is moving on and doing practical things and he is still dreaming over reaching for the stars. I think when he says, "oh my brother, your wisdom is all that I need," he is being sarcastic. Saying -- dont worry about me, im happy doing what I'm doing.
"How's that bricklayin' coming How's your engine running Is that bridge getting built Are your hands getting filled
Won't you tell me my brother 'Cause there are stars up above We can start moving forward"
I think he is saying, how is the practical life working out for you? Because we can still reach for the stars.
Basically -- i think this is about continuing to dream even when everyone around you is telling you it won't happen and giving in doing the norm... 9-5, wife and kids, middle-class thing.
This song means something different to me than most here.
I take it from my personal life.
I had a baby sister who was an addict and struggled with depression. She never loved herself despite the fact she was amazing (momma once told me you're already home where you feel love, I am lost in my mind). Aka in her mind she felt no love.
She always lived with me. She never met our dad and mom died when I was 19 and she was 14. She lived with me until she died of an OD at 24. She would come and go but always come home or call me when she needed something (your wisdom is all that I need). Then she'd feel better and disappear for a bit but tell us that she'd be fine (dont you worry, dont worry about me).
I take the song as her singing to me from heaven. Our dreams of her clean and with us for life are gone (put your dreams away for now). But she will see me again when it's my time (I wont see you for some time) because she was lost in her mind and turned to drugs.
The rest of the song is her asking how things are going. Is my family growing and happy (how's that bricklaying coming)? Am I happy and getting along okay (how's your engine running)? Is that bridge getting built (am i overcoming my grief and anger at her death)? Am I getting what I need (are your hands getting filled)?
Are there stars up above, shes watching me and its time we all move forward as best we can.
i'm not really sure what this song means..could anyone help? i thought i had something with the second verse, but i don't know where i was going with it. oh well, she sings like an angel anyways.(:
I think it's about a guy who's always in his own head, he gets lost in his mind. Maybe he has a profession that encourages this like a musician or author rather than a more concrete and hands on job like laying bricks and working with cars or bridges, which is what his brother does. He needs the wisdom of his brother which is to actually do stuff rather than just be in your own head. In the first two lines of the first two stanzas it shows how this hinders him. He retracts from everyone and won't see them for some time and also his mom gives him advice about finding love and a home but he can't see anyone or find love and home because he's so lost in his own mind.
I see it as a guy who has left behind a friend, or perhaps a family member in a small town for a bigger life, something not as simple. And the person who he has moved on from has hard feelings towards him for whatever reason. Whatever it means it's a truly beautiful song, and these artists are amazing.
