High In The Morning Lyrics

Boy, that bottle belongs to the devil
Better leave it on the shelf
Could be the old man wants it for himself

Well it hurts my heart to see a young man fall
Hurt me to my bones
To see him high in the morning
And by evening see him gone

Boy, that woman belongs to the captain
Better let her go her way
Before the captain got something to say

Well it hurts my heart to see a young man fall
Hurt me to my bones
To see him high in the morning
And by evening see him gone

Boy, that power belongs to the devil
Better leave that power alone
Could be the devil's going to want it for his own

Well it hurts my heart to see a young man fall
Hurt me to my bones
To see him high in the morning and by evening
See him gone
To see him high in the morning and by evening
See him gone

Cover art for High In The Morning lyrics by Tom Petty

This is a song about giving in to temptation, and it's thought to be about former Heartbreakers bass player Howie Epstein who died from the effects of heroin use - not in fact from an overdose, but heroin can mess you up in a lot more ways than that - in 2003. So the bottle, the woman, and the power all refer to the drug that poor Howie could never get free from.
