Brielle Lyrics
There's a handwritten note pressed in the door of her screened in porch
And I am sailing away recalling that day miles from shore
She was still wearing white and robins egg blue, Her grandmother's dress
When I left early this year, how I wound up here is anyone's guess
When the new sites grow old and I start to feel cold I'll sail home again
Goodbye Brielle
Only whispers can tell
Of the sweet dreams that we knew so well
I'll see you around our dear ocean town
The frozen days we set ablaze
Sent me drifting away
Like a butterfly, you floated by and now you're alone
I wish I knew when I'll be back again
So until then I wish you well
My dear Brielle
Strolling over the sand, in cobblestone paths that wind through the trees
And breathing the sweet forest air, makes a blue bird aware that she could be free
So until then I wish you well
So until then I wish you well
I love you my darling farewell
My dear Brielle
And I am sailing away recalling that day miles from shore
She was still wearing white and robins egg blue, Her grandmother's dress
When I left early this year, how I wound up here is anyone's guess
When the new sites grow old and I start to feel cold I'll sail home again

I believe this is a song about breaking up with someone, but still loving them and still viewing them as a friend. There seems to be a sense that the two characters live in a small coastal town, and perhaps the writer does not live there permanently, but often returns home for long periods of time.
I don't think that it is about a break-up... That's just not Adam's style. I think it is just about how it sounds... He goes away for long periods of time, and can't wait until he returns to see his girlfriend/friend. It is saying that he loves her very much, and can't wait to return to see her again. And through parts of the song he's remembering times that he has had with her, and that just leads him back to how much he misses her and want's to see her again. I'm not saying that is what it is about, that's just the picture that I get every time i hear this song. It's one of my favorite's by Adam Young =)
Adam Young said of this song: "Brielle is a little town on the coast of New Jersey. I wrote the song after reading Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson in which he recounts the discovery of a World War II German U-boat sixty miles off the U.S. coast in 1991. The song describes a sailor who is about to leave on a long trip and wonders whether he will ever see the girl he loves again.”
I think this song is really, really heartbreaking because (as the story was based on that book) - the book was found 60 miles off the US Coast. So, he never made it back to the town of Brielle. And he never made it back to her. Heartbreaking.
I've heard other things about the song, but I think this is probably the right one.

"There's a handwritten note pressed in the door of her screened in porch, recalling that day miles from shore" an invitation to a wedding that he does not want to go to, to a girl he liked, in his home town brielle. "She was still wearing white and robins egg blue, Her grandmother's dress" like the saying something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a white dress for the wedding, with something blue and something borrowed from her grandma. He was upset so he left, and no one really knew why "only whispers can tell" he'll come back home because he will get bored "so until til then, i wish you well" he wishes her luck about the new guy. this is just a guess, i really have no idea.
OR the note is a note he wrote her saying goodbye.

wow! I really like that!!

I think you're spot on with "something old something new something borrowed, something blue" - but I don't personally agree that he ran out on the wedding. "I left [home] early that year, how I wound up here is anyone's guess" - I think that, if he wasn't going out to sea (Adam said it's about a man on a German WWII U-Boat" - they would've got married & that's what she was ready for. & he left early, so there was more to be done (i.e. marriage & ). I don't think there's another guy. I think he left the sign when he went "early" (in the morning? Before she woke up?). So, he left the note on the door maybe because he couldn't face saying goodbye. Also, white also means "innocence" and a big theme in An Airplane Carried Me To Bed is "purity" & it runs through the whole album.
IDK, that's just my view on it. I could be very wrong. Adam's music is always about each listener's interpretation. I really like what you said though. I didn't even think about the wedding!
I love this song! <3

When he set out for his career he left behind his home in Alaska, his girl brielle etc. He plans to return as soon as he's done there n homesick to his loving Brielle. The filler are just how the two of them spent there days together.
His home is Owatonna, MN... Not Alaska
