Open up wide, swallow down deep
No spoon full of sugar could make it sweet
The cancer inside stealing my sleep
Night after night it keeps haunting me
The secrets I keep
Are tearing me up inside
I try to hide and then I wonder why

Why I’m still running when I know there’s no escaping

Come undone, surrender is stronger
I don’t need to be the hero tonight
We all want love we all want honour
Nobody wants to pay the asking price

Fall on my knees, fall on my pride
I’m tripping over all the times I’ve lied
I’m asking please, but I can see in your eyes
You don’t need tears for alibis
It’s true what they say
Love must be blind
It’s why You’re still standing by this sinner’s side

You’re still by my side when all the things I’ve done have left you bleeding

Come undone, surrender is stronger
I don’t need to be the hero tonight
We all want love we all want honour
Nobody wants to pay the asking price

I don’t think I can drive it home tonight
I don’t think I wanna be alone tonight

Come undone, surrender is stronger
I don’t need to be the hero tonight
We all want love we all want honour
Nobody wants to pay the asking price

    My Interpretation

I believe that the song is about someone that was hurt by someone else. "No spoon full of sugar could make it sweet The cancer inside stealing my sleep Night after night it keeps haunting me The secrets I keep Are tearing me up inside I try to hide and then I wonder why". When read from the outlook of someone that was abused in some way. One can then see that this song is a prayer to God. The cancer is the memories that only come at night when you are alone and they keep you awake. All people who are abused do not want to admit it happened but the longer you keep it a secret the more it eats one up on the inside. That is why in the cases on women sexually abused a lot of them contemplate and try suicide. "You’re still by my side when all the things I’ve done have left you bleeding". Most people that where abused in some way believe that it is their fault and blame themselves for it all. Also those abused will at some point in their life will curse and blame God, yet God remains there at our sides no matter what we do. That line can also be used towards a spouse or date. When an abused person tries to be in a relationship they will sometimes harm their partner without meaning to or take out their anger on that person. "We all want love we all want honour Nobody wants to pay the asking price" this line is so true, especially from the eyes of someone about to do something that is harder than a regular person would ever believe. Reporting the abuse what ever kind. The asking price is telling what happened and revealing to the world, friends and family that you were hurt, and the fear that they will think you are to blame and that they will look at you differently. All that any person ever wants to be loved and even more does the person abused but they think they are unworthy. If this was an essay I could probably give you 4 or more pages but since it is not I will end here.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
