Misery Lyrics

Oh yeah
Oh yeah
So scared of breaking it
But you won’t let it bend
And I wrote two hundred letters
I won’t ever send
Somehow it is cut so much
Deeper then they seem
You’d rather cover up
I’d rather let them be
So let me be
And I’ll set you free
[CHORUS]
I am in misery
There ain’t no other
Who can comfort me
Why won’t you answer me’
Your silence is slowly killing me
Girl you really got me bad
You really got me bad
I’m gonna get you back
Gonna get you back
Your salty skin and how
It mixes in with mine
Completely intertwined
It’s not that I didn’t care
It’s that I didn’t know
It’s not what I didn’t feel,
It’s what I didn’t show
So let me be
And I’ll set you free
[CHORUS]
Say your faith is shaken
You may be mistaken
You keep me wide awake and
Waiting for the sun
I’m desperate and confused
So far away from you
I’m getting here
Don’t care where I have to go
Why do you do what you do to me, yeah
Why won’t you answer me, answer me yeah
Why do you do what you do to me yeah
Why won’t you answer me, answer me yeah
[CHORUS]

I took this song in a different approach. I have feelings for my friend, and although most people think she is interested in me more than just friends... and I have told her how I feel... I refuse to show her how I feel and she won't say anything to me regarding how she feels to me. Whether it be because of trust issues and distance... I just feel in utter misery until I get her.

so scared of breaking it, that you won't let it bend and i wrote 200 letters i will never send sometimes these cuts are so much deeper than they seem you'd rather cover up i'd rather let them bleed

I think it's a tug-pull kind of love/hate relationship Adam is singing about, cause it seems that he gives and gives, but she takes and takes. So because of this he is always in misery. And also I think she keeps finding ways to point out what he is doing wrong and she won't just let him be. I'll break down some of the song lyrics to show what I mean...

"So scared of breaking it. But you won't let it bend."

  • She is afraid that if it ends, she won't be stable enough, so she won't bend to his way of thinking that is 10x's easier than her fears are telling her to believe.

"And I wrote two hundred letters. I won't ever send."

  • He wrote her so many emails/texts, but never got the nerve to send them to her telling how he really felt about things. He just can't get past something so he just saves it for a rainy day.

"Somehow it is cut so much. Deeper then they seem."

  • She hurt him badly, so bad that the scar is still etched on his heart... but she did it from the back so he feels it very deeply when it happened.

"You'd rather cover up. I'd rather let them be. So let me be. And I'll set you free."

  • She wants to forget everything that went wrong, including any girls from his past. He just wants to go with the flow, no matter what they are, but she won't go there with him, ever. So he just begs that if you let it be, you'll feel free of everything that drives you nuts about you and me.

"I am in misery. There ain't no other who can comfort me. Why won't you answer me? Your silence is slowly killing me."

  • She makes him feel like hell, but at the same time it's comforting that she drives him crazy. Yet at the same time she is giving him either the silent treatment or ignoring him because he pissed her off. So he is going out of his mind trying to figure out why she won't say anything back.

"Girl you really got me bad. You really got me bad. I'm gonna get you back. Gonna get you back."

  • She played a good head game on him, so now he is cleaver back to her and playing harder than her.

"Your salty skin and how it mixes in with mine, completely intertwined."

  • He loves it when they get down and dirty together, so caught up that they are intertwined completely physically.

"It's not that I didn't care. It's that I didn't know. It's not what I didn't feel, It's what I didn't show."

  • He is saying with reference to the prior line above, that it was so care free, the sex. Yet he started to feel something and just didn't want to show he was falling for her so quickly. He just held back because he didn't know what she wanted from him. He knew there was something, but she was detached from it all.

"Say your faith is shaken. You may be mistaken."

  • She keeps thinking he is cheating/betraying her everytime she isn't around him. He keeps trying to tell her that he won't leave her or sleep with another, but her. She won't believe him.

"You keep me wide awake and waiting for the sun. I'm desperate and confused."

  • She fills his head with thoughts that make him question her while he toss and turns in bed, till the break of dawn most nights. He also just feels so desperate when it comes to her, like he is the girl and she is the boy... she leaves him so confused.

"So far away from you. I'm getting here. Don't care where I have to go."

  • He feels so distant from her physically and emotionally, that he is trying hard to get on her level, he'll get there, doesn't matter when or where, he wants to get there.
My Interpretation

Does anyone know what the first verse means? Besides that, I think it's about a girl who broke his heart, and gave him no answers/reasons for the break up? Haha, just a stab in the dark. And I think he's saying he's going to get her back for the misery she has caused him.

"Its not that I didnt care Its that I didnt know Its not what I didnt feel, Its what I didnt show"

Maybe he didn't show her love/she didn't feel loved, so she left, and now he's hurting. I'd love to hear some other interpretations of this song!

I think the song itself is about a relationship that isn't working, but even though he knows it's not working, it's still hard to just walk away from. He's so in love with her that even though he knows she's bad for him, he can't just quit her. He's in misery to be with her but in misery when he's not with her, and he thinks she's playing with his heart.

Specifically, in the first verse, I think he's trying to end it but she won't let him (So scared of breaking it but YOU won't let it bend). ...

Thanks for the reply, that definitely makes sense! Sad in a way haha.

i thin mayb he did something like chest on her or smn and shes like figure it out urself...thats wut i did with my x

Song Meaning

I think maybe he's kinda... obsessed with this girl, and she wont give him the time of day, or return his calls or anything, and it's making him misrible.

this video is awesome. reminds me of "she loves everybody" video though, but more intnese.

This Song means that He post to be one of those bad boys who dont show emotions really and he likes the pain thats she giving toward him making him want her more so she does it to keep distance of how much she really wants him so he's gonna get her back by being more distant to where she cant take it no more and she just wants him

Personally I think that although Maroon 5 are tackling the issue of violence, they are singing about love and relationships. 'Misery' and him being in misery could mean that he is 'in love' with this girl. Although their relationship might be flawed, wrong or bad, he wants her. She makes him miserable, hurts him but yet he wants and needs her, loves their relationship. I also think though that she is forcing the issue, he doesn't want to commit, possibly. 'Let me be and I'll set you free'. She maybe wants him to share his feelings but he can't (potentially why she is making him miserable), he's saying that if she leaves things the way they are, everything will work out/ be better. Alternatively that could mean; if she doesn't react, 'answer' him or do something about them and their relationship, he doesn't want to continue with her and therefore will let go, 'set her free'.

Overall I think that although their relationship is troubled, he wants her. He's probably ridiculously in love with her, possibly for all the wrong reasons. It's a pathetic situation. She won't completely give him what he wants and so he's fighting for it.

The moment I heard this song, it made me think about this:

He loves her. He loves her more than anything. And she treats him somewhat...horribly. She loves him too...but doesn't know how to treat him right. Maybe she has insecurities, and spills them all on him. Or she keeps accusing him of stuff he didn't do. He tries to show her that he loves her and doesn't want to be away from her. Sometimes she calms down and loves him too, but sometimes she gets all mad and it hurts him that he's being accused and treated that way.

Well, this is what I got from the song:

"So scared of breaking it But you wont let it bend And I wrote two hundred letters I wont ever send"

To me, that set the pace for the whole song. I think that they had problems in their relationship- she was controlling (but didn't want him to leave), and he was too passive. They were different.

"So let me be and I'll set you free I am in misery"

He wishes he could get her out of his mind so he can move on. He gave up on it (or she did) momentarily, and he feels regret (he's "in misery").

There ain't no other Who can comfort me

He really loves her, he feels that no one can be there for him like she was.

"Your salty skin and how it mixes in with mine... completely intertwined"

He's reflecting on how similar they really were, and what a close connection they had despite their problems.

"It's not that I didn't care It's that I didn't know It's not what I didn't feel, It's what I didn't show"

This is kind of reiterating the first verse. Basically saying how he was too passive. He's explaining that although he really loved her, he failed in showing it.

The rest of the song is basically saying how he wants her back... he can't get her out of his head!
