This song is so good. It's a shame it's a breakup song, because if the singer was in a happier stage in life this song would be even better. Lyrics are so sad...but he's 30...i feel like he should be more confident about finding someone new

It's about a break-up. My guess as to the reasons behind it are that she cheated on him while he was away (if the lyrics are true, maybe while he was on tour?). Sounds like an unsuccessful long-term relationship. "Just cause you needed a hand" - she needed a hand with coping with his absence, so she cheated on him.

I've just been turned on to future islands. I saw them on Jools Holland recently and downloaded about 8 songs to get a feel. I like each one; a lot. I had heard something different before reading the lyrics. I thought it was "just cause you needed a high". I'd figured she had to cheat because she was sick and NEEDED a high. I guess we all hear different things. Still like the song though
