The Beat Lyrics

Stand there lady
Won't you just stand still
She's had a white mercedes
And I know she will

And then the beat comes
And then she's moving on the dance floor
And I wonder what she's running from
If it'll catch her

Her heart is broken
But she won't say that
Her heart is broken
But she can't go back
But she can't go back

And the nights move forward
Don't they just move on
She's on a mission, baby
And she's almost one

And then the beat comes
And then she's moving on the dance floor
And I wonder what she's running from
If it'll catch her

Her heart is broken
But she won't say that
Her heart is broken
But she can't go back
But she can't go back

But she can't go back

Your heart is a lonely one
Your heart is a lonely one
Your heart is a lonely one

Your heart is broken
But you won't say that
Your heart is broken
But you can't go back
No, you can't go back

Cover art for The Beat lyrics by Ben Rector

She's trying to get over someone. She's dancing and putting on a brave face, while having a broken heart. She knows time keeps going on and she can't go backwards in time, so she's trying to move on as fast as she can.

Song Meaning
Cover art for The Beat lyrics by Ben Rector

About an independent and extremely flirtatious girl who falls for a guy but her insecurity is at the root of her relationship's problems and the cause of its end. He breaks her heart because he found no security in her, and therefore the relationship as a whole. Her heart is broken but she won't say it (out of her insecurity she won't risk being vulnerable even though she's not over him). However she, being blind to her own insecurity because she is insecure herself, can't go back to something that brought her so much heartbreak. It was because her core flaws becoming exposed that led to heartbreak. It wasn't him, it was her that led to her own destruction.
